Couple get married at Bristol Children's Hospital with baby as bridesmaid

A couple have wed in Bristol Children's Hospital with their daughter as their bridesmaid.

Louise and Karim's daughter Layla has been in hospital for most of her life after she was born in December.

Layla was transferred from Devon, where the couple live, to an intensive care unit in Plymouth, Devon Live reports.

She has only been at home for 10 days in total since she was born and has been receiving treatment at Bristol Children's Hospital since March.

The couple's wedding went ahead at Bristol Registry Office and they held a blessing at the hospital's activity centre.

Louise and Karim decided to get married now because Layla has CHARGE syndrome and so has hearing loss, heart defects and several complex complications.

The hospital centre was transformed into a magical wedding venue with balloons, flowers, a three-tier cake and festoons of photographs from all the couples’ loved ones who could not attend.

Layla wore a pale pink ruffled dress as she was pushed safely down the aisle in her hospital bed by nurses to perform her bridesmaid duties.

The hospital staff created the venue and hospital consultants helped the couple obtain a special marriage licence to enable the wedding to take place at the hospital.

Louise and Karim said: “Everyone was so kind, the staff really made sure Layla was safe throughout and the consultants kindly helped with getting the waiver through for the marriage.”
