A couple were left with no choice but to "jump out of a window" with their dog after a massive blaze tore through their home in south Leeds.
The fire started at the semi-detached property in Broom Crescent, Belle Isle, at around 11pm yesterday (Tuesday) and many rooms in the house were soon engulfed by flames.
Much of the downstairs of the house has been completely devastated by the fire, which has seen the living room become a hollow empty shell after the fierce heat blasted through the front door and several windows of the property.
A woman who lives nearby - and who did not want to be named - told LeedsLive about the couple's dramatic escape.
"I heard that they jumped out of the back window with the dog," she said.
"The woman was stood out here [on the road] for a while, but then she was taken to hospital."
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed the woman suffered smoke inhalation after the fire started on the ground floor and soon spread upwards through the property. She was transferred to hospital by ambulance.
"They're a really nice couple," said the woman, who lives on Broom Crescent. "They keep themselves to themselves.
"As soon as I came down and saw it I thought, 'what's gone on here?'.
"We've never had something like this happen round here before. It's quiet."
Fire crews are believed to be have been on the scene until around 2am this morning (Wednesday), but the road has since reopened.
A police car remained outside the property throughout the morning.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Crews used four breathing apparatus, two hose reels and a high powered fan to clear smoke from the property.
"Smoke detection was fitted but unsure if it actuated due to the damage to the property.
"Two pumps from Hunslet and one from Leeds attended. A fire investigation officer has also attended to investigate the cause of the fire."
