Couple convert old hearse into 'Grim Sleeper' campervan

A couple toured the northern coastline of Scotland in a converted hearse nicknamed "The Grim Sleeper."

Shannon Orr, 24, and Iain Cameron, 31, decided to tackle the North Coast 500 in a 1998 Volvo 960 Hearse after seeing the converted vehicle advertised on Facebook.

The Warrington couple, from Culcheth, snapped it up for £3,500 and went motoring in the Scottish Highlands earlier this month, taking in some breathtaking sights.

Garage worker Iain told the ECHO: "We only bought the vehicle a week before the trip after I saw it on a page I follow - Unusual Cars UK.

"My girlfriend wasn't sure about it, but by the end she loved it.

"We slept inside it, and there was a fridge, cooker sink, and other home comforts.

"It was quiet, we ended up sleeping in a few times as it was so comfortable.

"We pulled up and pitched up at the side of river and beaches, it was great.

"When we bought it from a bloke in Cannock, he'd already done a great conversion on it.

"As we drove around Scotland, it was giving fellow visitors whiplash as they'd suddenly turn round to look at this hearse that had just moved past them.

"It was a really good car to do the North Coast 500 in as those roads can be narrow at times, and it was perfect to negotiate them.

"And the Grim Sleeper was always a point of conversation amongst other tourers, we'd have people coming over and asking us about it.

"Because of the black tinted windows, we could be in there and people wouldn't realise and be coming up close to take photos of it."

The couple decked out the hearse with other spooky additions like Halloween figures on the dashboard, ducks on the wing mirrors and the skeletons on the front and back.

Iain is considering more trips in the Grim Sleeper or even hiring it out for people wanting something different for special occasions.

He added: "It feels slightly weird now having it parked out the front of the house, but we've got lots of future plans for it."
