Couple celebrate 70 year anniversary at Midlothian care home

A couple at a Midlothian care home are celebrating their 70 year wedding anniversary on Monday.

John and Rose Ferguson are enjoying their platinum anniversary at Salisbury View care home in Mayfield, after having received a letter of congratulations on behalf of the Queen.

It was love at first sight when they met aged 20 and 17 respectively.

They were married two years later in July 1949 at a registry office in Edinburgh.

The couple initially lived in Musselburgh but eventually settled in Mayfield when John was stationed at Easthouses Pit. Rose worked as a clerk for various companies including Ferranti in Dalkeith.

Midlothian's Provost Peter Smaill presented the happy couple with flowers while Vice Lord Lieutenant Richard Callander congratulated them on behalf of the Queen.

John and Rose have a daughter, Heather, and son, Leslie. They are also grandparents to Nicki and great-grandparents to Tommy aged eight.
