Couple attacked in Twinbrook reportedly after asking young people to 'move on'

A man and woman have been attacked reportedly after asking a group of youths to move on.

Police are investigating the ‘report of an assault’ at Cherry Road in the Twinbrook area of West Belfast in the early hours of Tuesday morning (December 29).

A PSNI spokesman said: “It was reported that a man and a woman were punched and kicked by a group of youths in the street at around 12.40am on Tuesday morning. The incident is believed to have occurred after the couple had asked the youths to move on. The man and woman were taken to hospital following the assault and treated for cuts and bruising.”

The police say enquiries are ongoing “to identify those involved and officers would ask anyone with information about this incident or who may be able to help with the investigation to call police at Woodbourne on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference number 35 29/12/20”.

They added that witnesses can also submit a report online using the non-emergency reporting form at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.

Sinn Fein Councillor Stephen Magennis condemned the attack and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He added: “I would wish the family affected a speedy recovery from what must have been a frightening incident. We are doing what we can to help, but I would ask that people who can help should contact the police or myself if they have any information.”
