Couple, 70s, left without home before Christmas following devastating fire

An elderly couple have been left with just the clothes on their back just days before Christmas following a fire at their city centre home.

Claire and Frank Hanlon, both in their 70s, escaped with their lives after their home went up in flames on Friday evening.

The Dublin Fire Brigade rushed to the scene and quelled the flames but the upstairs of their home was completely destroyed and the much-loved pair were left devastated.

It's believed an electrical fault may have been the cause of the blaze.

They'll now be spending Christmas in their daughter's home meanwhile thousands have been raised to help get them back on their feet.

Despite being asked not to make a fuss, locals around Pearse St and Ringsend were quick to dig into their pockets to replace lost clothes as well as other bits and pieces.

Neighbour Caroline Murphy and Claire's niece Nichole Kelly set up a fundraiser which has since seen over €2,000 roll in.

Speaking to Dublin Live Caroline said the couple are well-known and loved in the area and news of their home has been devastating.

She also said Frank insisted they didn't need to help but "that wasn't going to happen on everyone's watch".

So far a GoFundMe has hit over €1,800 while loads more has been donated in cash door-to-door and in local pubs.

One person also donated a storage facility for them to use until they get a home back.
