County Durham road closed for hours after collision near Tesco

A County Durham road was closed for several hours on Saturday following a collision.

The crash happened outside of Tesco, in Annfield Plain, with ambulances, police and paramedics called to the scene of the emergency.

Officers placed a cordon up at opposite ends of Station Road, forcing traffic to be diverted.

Debris was visible behind the barrier.

Despite requests to Durham Constabulary for comment, details of what exactly happened have not yet been made public.

However there was a heavy police presence in the area, with multiple vehicles including collision investigation vans.

And on Saturday evening, the force posted a brief update on Facebook that the road had reopened.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called at 12:08pm today to reports of a road traffic collision in West Road, Stanley.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, a BASICS paramedic, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance."

Buses also had to be diverted, with Go North East tweeting that the 78, X30, 6, 16 and 32 services all had to be diverted due to an "incident".

ChronicleLive also approached the Great North Air Ambulance service for comment.
