County Durham mental health charity to close due to 'difficult climate'

A mental health charity has announced it will be closing in County Durham after more than 30 years.

Derwentside Mind, which is based in Consett, will stop delivering mental health services from the end of September.

The charity said “sustainability issues” and the “difficult current climate” meant there was no other option but to close.

The service was set up in 1984 and has offered a range of services that include social access groups, self-help groups for women, young people and people suffering from anxiety, and a befriending service.

A spokesman for the charity said: “Very sadly, after many years working in Derwentside to improve mental health and offer support and services to the people, the Trustee Board has taken the difficult decision that we must close Derwentside Mind.

“Despite our best efforts to find solutions, a variety of sustainability issues and the difficult current climate has left us with no other option than to close.

“We will no longer be delivering mental health services after 30 September 2020.

“We understand many people will be upset and concerned to hear this news and so we also want to let you know that the trustees and national Mind are exploring alternative future provision of mental health services might be available in the area.”
