County Durham drug dealer caught after Border Force flagged suspicious package to police

A County Durham drug dealer was nabbed after the Border Force "intercepted" a package and notified the police.

Police became aware of Michael Wilkinson after a package that was addressed to him arrived in the UK.

And when officers went to his Stanley home on August 27, last year, they discovered bags of amphetamine in the kitchen.

Wilkinson appeared at Durham Crown Court on Thursday to be sentenced for possession of a class B drug with intent to supply.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to the single charge at the morning hearing.

Jonathan Gittins, prosecuting, said two police officers went to Wilkinson's home after "information was received from the Border Forces".

"A package containing drugs was addressed to him".

Wilkinson was arrested and "a number of items were seized" during a search.

The court was told that six small bags containing "brown paste" were found in a kitchen drawer alongside a creatine container which also contained packages.

Four mobile phones were also discovered and the substances were later tested.

Mr Gittins said that the tests determined that the substances found in the home were amphetamines.

In police interview, Wilkinson, who is unemployed, claimed the packages were left in his home by "someone else" and he was "unaware" they contained drugs.

The court heard that Wilkinson, of Prospect Terrace, Stanley, had no previous convictions.

Tony Davis, defending, said Wilkinson was a "young man who has been significantly used by the other", but had "seen sense" and pleaded guilty during the hearing.

Judge Ray Singh told Wilkinson it was "very foolish" to suggest he did not know what was contained in the packages.

The judge said drugs were "undoubtedly" being sent to Wilkinson or his address and said the package was "intercepted" by the Border Force.

Wilkinson was given an eight month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He was also made subject of a four month electronic curfew.
