Tanya Aldred's roundup
Discarded by England, David Willey was given an energetic round of applause by the Yorkshire faithful in his first red-ball game for the county this season.
He duly clubbed six fours in his 34 before hitting Fidel Edwards to mid-on and slowly dragging himself off the Headingley pitch. It was a push-me-pull-you day for Yorkshire, shimmers of solidarity on a rainy day before a fine Hampshire attack winkled them out. Edwards, bustling in with his rag-doll arms as the light waxed and waned, took four wickets in 12 balls after tea, bowling Ben Coad for a golden duck to complete his five-for. Oliver Stone was then lbw to Coad off what was to be the last ball of the day to leave Hampshire 14 for one, 167 runs behind.
Against Kent at Chelmsford, Alastair Cook made 125 in his 100th first-class match for Essex before being run out after coming back for a cheeky second. It was only the third time he had been run out in first-class cricket. Ravi Bopara chipped in with 61 and there were three wickets for the tidy medium-pace of Darren Stevens, who also snaffled a balletic catch just a pancake from the ground at short-midwicket. Essex, eight down at the close, were the only team to pass 300.
Warwickshire’s batting showed a glimmer of steel as they reached 275 for eight against Surrey at a damp Edgbaston thanks to 47 from Sam Hain and a knockabout 58 from the No 10 Liam Norwell. Matt Dunn, playing his first championship game for a year, was the pick of the Surrey attack with three for 59.
In Division Two at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire were bowled out for 205 by Lancashire with Saqib Mahmood taking four for 48 and a couple of wickets apiece for Jimmy Anderson and Liam Livingstone. Miles Hammond was strong and stable with a 204-ball 82. There was just time for Haseeb Hameed to be run out after a slight miscommunication with Keaton Jennings and Jake Lehmann to be bowled for a duck before bad light stopped play with the visitors 158 runs behind.
After bowling out Derbyshire for 139 thanks to three wickets apiece from Mohammad Abbas and Chris Wright, Leicestershire found themselves in trouble at 51 for four – Tony Palladino the sorcerer with three for three in nine overs. Only Wayne Madsen (47) scored more than 18 on either side.
At New Road a game that started late hit fast-forward after Middlesex were bowled out for 221, with the returning captain Dawid Malan the top scorer with 45. There were three wickets each for Charlie Morris and Josh Tongue. Worcestershire were 64 for three at the close.
Chris Jordan, with three for 31, and a burst of finality at the tail from Jared Warner ensured Sussex bowled out Glamorgan for 186 at Hove. A century from Philip Salt then ambled Sussex into the lead with five wickets remaining.
So that’s all for the day - see you soon.
Six fours so far in David Willeys 28 not out and very stylish they’ve looked too - time for me to write up. Just time to mention that Alastair C was run out for 125...a baby daddy...is his sangfroid still entact?

No problems yet for Lancashire, Leicestershire or Worcestershire with the bat.
Philip Salt leading the way for Sussex with 50 not out, fast chasing Glamorgan’s 186 all out.
Middlesex tail a-wiggling and a-waggling to 221 all out from 151/6. Malan 45; Morris and Tongue three each.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore has his eye on opening for Yorkshire. Looking snappy today, sharp strokes in front and behind the wicket. I hope this works, on the ECB blog.
And with that, TKC is yorked for 45. Yorks 131/5. LOUD sympathy applause for David Willey.
And that’s the hundred in his hundredth first-class match for Essex since his debut in 2003 - a fresh-faced, cherubic, preternaturally sweat-free batting being.

Cook into the nineties at Chelmsford..
From the Kirkstall Road end, Leaning prods at Fuller and is nicely caught by Rahane at slip. Yorkshire trip again, 116/4, just when the ground was looking firmer.
An unbelievably loyal coterie of Yorkshire folk have sat through this truncated day when they could have hopped on the Scarborough express.
The umpires are inspecting the pitch as the ground staff pull the yellow hose round the ground with a tractor.

But in Division two, batting has been a touch more ...challenging. Derby 139 all out, Abbas 3-38, Wright 3-39. Glamorgan 186 all out, Warner and Jordan three each.
Six down at Cheltenham and New Road.
A slumberous day - or maybe that’s just in the Headingley press box. Paul Edwards is thinking about a Twirl, I’ve had a Twix, Graham a Boost and Mark Arthur a caramel Magnum. Covers still on, though Tom Kohler-Canmore will be supping happily after a few lovely shots. Billowing smoke coming from the direction of town. They’ve taken an early tea here while the rain faffs about.
Elsewhere in Div one, batting has become easier: Warwick’s rebuilding 127 for 3; Essex 192 for three, Cook 75/not out.
And more rain at Headingley, hammer in the tent pegs, and the Yorks batsmen scamper in at 104 for three. Kohler-Canmore 32 not our,Leaning 20 not out.
Worcestershire’s attack getting stuck in at New Road - after a partnership of 62 between Eskinazi and Malan, Eskinazi falls for 22- a second wicket for Ross Whitely. Middx 154/4, Malan 45 not out.
Summary
Sussex’s 72 run seventh-wicket stand comes to an end at Hove when Chris Jordan has Wagg caught behind for 44. The smiling assassin now has three for 30. Glamorgan 178/7.
And 51 not out for Alastair Cook as Essex roll along -145/2 at a charmed Chelmsford.
Warwickshire’s batting has been saved by the rain at Edgbaston - 95/3 and back in the pavilion.
Hurray that only took half an hour to work out!

And Gary Ballance plods off, having looked every inch the prince for his 12 before knocking Barker behind to Donald in borrowed gloves. Yorks 65 for three and in a wee spot of bother.
Saqib Mahmood now three for 19 against Gloucestershire. An outside chance of an Ashes call-up this summer?
Wayne Madsen , well he was nearing 50, but Abbassed for 46, Derbyshire in the doldrums 93/6.
Edwards lets it fly and Ballance flaps his trousers innocently. Edwards is peeved. Next over Lyth is caught off Barker for 18 - Yorks 50/2.
A murmur of approval as Adam Lyth is dropped on 18 o’ff Barker... Yorks 44/1.
Hello again, and the news from Headingley is that Hampshire’s keeper Tom Alsop is off and Nye Donald is stand-in keeper. And with that Brook gets an inside edge onto his stumps and Yorkshire are 44 for one.

Essex 71/1 - Alastair Cook a steady 28 in an hour and a half.
Sorry about the staccato entries, an iPad does weird things to your wrists.
Leeds’ weather doesn’t know what it’s doing - now full sun as Adam Lyth patiently studies Keith Barker with an open face.
Fidel Edwards looks at the brollies, feels for rain and runs in anyway. Lyth and Brook watch carefully and trill him back. Ting! York’s 9/0.
Warwickshire’s batting in non-collapse shock 41/0.
Glamorgan lose snother - Carlson for five to Jordan. Selman watching the carnage 43 not out. Glam:84/5.
Afghanistan having a broken box of eggs of a morning -92/8.
Hampshire are without Donald, Berg and Abbott ...but that’s as much as you’re going to get as the ground staff slowly wheel the covers back on again and the umbrellas sprout wings all round the ground.
Leicestershire have a double hit -losing two for nothing as both Reece and Godleman fall with the score on 24.
Yorkshire have won the toss and will bat.
Essex one down - 43/1 - Browne for 24.
Max Holden out at New Road - Middx 17/1.
It’s raining at Edgbaston after Warwickshire coasted to 27 and, oh my, Glamorgan are 44/4 to Hamza and Wiese
Inspection here - sun out and umps in white coats pottering.
Apologies for the lack of updates, my unreliable laptop has just become more unreliable, a million thanks to Graham Hardcastle for lending me his iPad. Proper updates to follow.
The covers are being peeled off at Headingley but I’d have thought we’re at least half an hour from play starting. Start delayed too at New Road, with play due to begin at 11.30.
And follow England’s progress (and injury scares) in ball by ball coverage of the warm-up game v Afghanistan here
Seems 10,000 hours is mumbo-jumbo...

Preamble
Good Morning from Headingley, where the rain is drumming on the press box roof and it looks like the start will be delayed this bank holiday Monday.
I’m a little weary after an late night EU election telly stint on the sofa, but a double expresso at Manchester Victoria took the edge off and there are some smashing games to look forward to.
But first some obscure trivia: I was tipped off by a chap on the No. 1 bus to take a look at this, 21 year old Kershaski John Lewis from Dominica who made 237 not out for Carlton v Jer Lane -beating the highest score in the Bradford Premier League.
“He had never been to England before, but you wouldn’t know it,” said Carlton cricket chairman Philip Hulme. “He has made a huge impact and we are all going to celebrate his record with him.”
Anyway, back to the Championship, where there is a rich menu for all tastes.
Division One
Yorkshire v Hampshire: overnight rain adds a touch of pepper to this clash between second and third. Hampshire, whose only Championship defeat came against Yorkshire at the Ageas Bowl in April, come fresh from defeat in the Royal London Final and are without James Vince and Liam Dawson. But with Ajinkya Rahane, who played beautifully at Newclose. Yorkshire are without Tim Bresnan, out for a month, he’s expected to be replaced by the luckless David Willey.
Warwickshire v Surrey: two teams struggling in their different ways meet at a damp Edgbaston. Fifth-placed Surrey have been slow out of the blocks this year; Warwickshire sit at the bottom of Division One with three losses out of three and just 10 points. A bright star amongst the gloom the bowling of Liam Norwell. Also news, Sussex wicketkeeper Michael Burgess joins Warwicks on a two-year deal on June 1.
Essex v Kent: The friendly southern rivals head to Chelmsford. Essex beat Nottinghamshire in the last round of games and Kent are perky from a hardy last day rearguard action against Surrey.
Division Two
Worcestershire v Middlesex: Second placed Worcestershire are without Wayne Parnell, still suffering from the hamstring injury he suffered in the defeat to Lancashire at Old Trafford. Josh Tongue is expected to return. David Malan slots in as Middlesex captain after recovering from a groin injury and Toby Roland-Jones and Tim Murtagh strengthen the squad.
Sussex v Glamorgan: Glamorgan dance down to Hove alive with feeling after the wonderful victory over Derbyshire. Andrew Salter, Timm van der Gugten, Marchant de Lange and Kiran Carlson all return to the squad.
Leicestershire v Derbyshire: seventh v eighth, Leicestershire from a draw with Middlesex, Derbyshire from a close-run defeat against Glamorgan.
Gloucestershire v Lancashire: The first day of three Championship matches at Cheltenham this season. It isn’t the usual Cheltenham wicket, but the school pitch which is considered quicker. Lancashire arrive with victories in their first three Championship games for the first time since 1995, Alex Davies is expected to play after recovering from his broken thumb. Gloucestershire are unbeaten in the Championship this season.
