In the absence of any cricket, I’m half-tempted to liveblog the train journey I’m currently on. Just pulling out of Coventry now. But then that’s probably a dereliction of duty, isn’t it? I feel rather like I’m bunking off school. It’s actually far more green just outside Coventry than I thought it would be.
But seeing as I’ve just learnt that Kent and Derbyshire have also finished a damp draw and thus there is officially no more cricket happening today (Leicester and Gloucester’s out of kilter fixture will finish tomorrow and probably be soaking wet too...), it seems as good a time as any to call a halt to things for the week.
Thanks so much for your company, it really is great. You’ve executed your commenting and clicking skills well given the lack of cricket. I’ll be back on Sunday - I still haven’t worked out if I’ll be at Trent Bridge or Scarborough (I may mix things up) - for more of the same. Looking forward to seeing you all there. I gather the covers are being drawn back at the Oval, so you should probably all head here, where Dan Lucas and Adam Collins are doing their beautiful thing.
I’m pulling into Rugby. Thank you kindly... Over and out...
Leicestershire are right up there in the number of overs lost.
Miscalculated @leicsccc champo overs lost now - it's actually more, 930. Fear tmrw will top 1,000. Off for a run to let off steam. #FFTF

Still not over at Lord’s or the Ageas, I see. And lunchy at Canterbury.
And they’ve been called off at Leicester. And Lord’s is imminent too, I’m told.

This game of cricket has been put out of its torrid misery. Match drawn :-(
I’m going for some lunch. Call-off imminent. Speak shortly. Tough gig, this.
Sensational from Latham, this.

I’m fairly worried my day watching it rain is going to lead to me just taking the michael out of official sporting bodies’ accounts on here.
The rain just got heavier here.
Optimism at t’Oval.
Covers on as the teams warm up... and the rain drops are getting a tad heavier, sadly #EngvSL pic.twitter.com/z4O2ZxVYBm

Gonna shock you here: still no cricket at Edgbaston.
Or, for that matter, at Lord’s:

On a related note, I’ve always thought Michael Klinger’s surname sounded rather like a high-end brand of gore-tex hiking gear or something similar that you’d buy in Milletts. Could do with a bit of that today.
Sam Northeast(erly) could count, I guess, in our search for weather-named criggiters. As, of course, would Ollie Rayner.
Oh bloody hell we’ve had a wicket! Ben Cotton has got Sean Dickson out at Canterbury! Cricket! Wtf!
Two good shouts from BTL. Matt Parky Parkinson definitely counts as one of our weathermen.
And yes, we definitely are waiting on a sunny day.
Not actually an overseas. Just come from Scotland. Geddit? He’s playing well, but they could have done with him at the Oval last week. They have an actual overseas coming next week. Imran Blooming Tahir.
@willis_macp "Who is this new overseas player Notts have signed to prop up their batting - Rain? Is he from New Zealand?"
— Rob McGregor (@RobMcGregor35) June 29, 2016
Good question.
@willis_macp is it just me, or has this season been rainier than usual? or perhaps this is just a result of the national malaise...
— bleurgh (@PossiblyRobNob) June 29, 2016
An answer: in a word, yes. It’s been properly minging. Just been chatting to Ian Bell - yeah, I know right - and he says they’re approaching 750 overs lost for the season. Think Middlesex, Durham, Kent and Worcestershire (latter two lost all four days of their opening fixture) are the worst affected, though. Wettest June in cricketing memory is the expression, I believe. It’s blooming relentless, and actually a bit sad.
I’ve put my email address up top in the standfirst. Email me your silliness or put them in the comments. You can also rudely tweet me pithier thoughts @willis_macp.
I’m wondering, possibly, for today’s game - in lieu of my DJing from yesterday - whether we discuss cricketers with rainy/weathery names.
Obvs you’ve got John Snow from way back when, but English cricket is really executing its skills when it comes to producing young players with talented rainy surnames at the moment. Coming up through the ranks are Hampshire’s Joe Weatherley and Leicestershire’s Ben Raine. Any more for any more on the current circuit?
Morning all it's the morning call
Morning all. It’s raining again. I’d swear if I was allowed to.
So this morning I had the chance to stick … or twist. As readers of yesterday’s county cricket - live! will well know, it veritably wazzed it down here in Birmingham yesterday, and play was aborted shortly after lunch, never to return. The forecast, at that stage, was even bleaker for today, the final day of Notts visit to Warwickshire.
As a result I scoured forecasts around the land to see if there would be play anywhere. London, where I live, and Lord’s seemed a decent enough option. I’d travel south early rather than late. But when I woke up early this morning with half an eye on doing that, I discovered that the forecast for NW8 had worsened; Birmingham looked just as grim. I resolved to stay.
I guess, in a way, it hasn’t turned out too badly at all. There’s a delayed start at both grounds. At almost all the grounds, in fact, with only Canterbury getting away on time.
Here, play looks high unlikely. We’re taking early lunch at 12 and the call could come very soon after that; the rain is by no means heavy, but the whole place is just soggy. And damp. It ain’t going nowhere.
Worst of all, I think I exhausted every song I know about rain when pretending to be a DJ yesterday, so I can’t even do that. Any suggestions as to how I entertain myself?
Morning all,
We are back with Will at Edgbaston today. Here’s his roundup from yesterday:
Enjoy the action.
