Derbyshire v Northamptonshire: Derbyshire 260 (Wilson 66, Hosein 58; Sanderson 5-53); Northamptonshire 74-3 (Procter 30; Palladino 2-12)

Latest score

Sussex v Glamorgan: Sussex 276 for 9 (Wells 71, Salt 48, Brown 49; Hogan 4-33)

And that was a quite ridiculous batting performance by Lancashire. What a day! I hope Jordan Clark can still enjoy a celebration drink and a pat on the back after one of the best hatricks ever, despite what came afterwards. Have a lovely evening everyone!

Two balls later, Vilas lbw Patterson 0. Lancashire 55/3 - effectively four down with Livingstone with his arms strapped up on the balcony.

Updated

Hameed shoulders arms to Patterson and is bowled for 1. Lancashire 55/2.

Wicket! An astonishing one-handed catch by Joe Root, tumbling to his left at short mid-wicket, off Patterson to dismiss Jennings for 22. Lancashire 46-1. Hameed walks out. Don’t leave it Hass.

From Raf:

At Guildford Southern Vipers have just beaten Surrey Stars by 7 wickets in the 17th over. Tammy Beaumont finishes unbeaten on 62 and will presumably be Player of the Match, although let’s not forget that it was Sophia Dunkley who put Stars in a position where it was even a contest.

Reigning champions Western Storm have also won their match by 7 wickets, although Heather Knight didn’t quite make it to 3 figures - going for a big slog trying to hit the winning runs, she was caught on 97!

So to summarise: Southern Vipers, Western Storm and Loughborough Lightning all have fairly comfortable wins in the bag on the first day of the Super League.

Updated

Trott serenely gathering more runs, 34 not out in Warwickshire’s 84-2.

At Canterbury, Dexter and Eckersley help Leicestershire limp towards Kent’s paltry 104: 86/4. Higgins nearing his century at Cheltenham as Gloucestershire pass 300: 303-6.

Northants 27 for 0 in reply to Derbyshire’s 260. And Wells 71 not out in the pink ball game at Hove, Sussex 139/3.

A steady start by Lancashire as Brooks and Coad charge in with four slips. The ball is sniffing about. Lancashire are a batsman down...

Another wicket for Moeen, Trego for 1, as Somerset move on to 265-6. Abell 70 not out. Gosh - and Surrey already 112 for 0; Stoneman a 58-ball 72 not out.

From Raf:

It’s already all over in Southport, where Loughborough Lightning have emphatically beaten Lancashire Thunder by 6 wickets, chasing the runs down with 5 overs to spare. Easy as you like.

At Taunton England captain Heather Knight may be on course for the first 100 of KSL03 - she’s on 92*, with her side Western Storm just 15 runs away from beating Yorkshire Diamonds.

Looks like Vipers are heading towards a win here in Guildford too - after going 2 down early they’ve just brought up their 100 in the 11th over, with Mignon du Preez (42*) and Tammy Beaumont (38*) steadying the ship. Could be another early finish!

And its a five-fer! A career-best! A run-out! A hat-trick! And a perfect day for Jordan Clark: 5-58 as he bowls Coad for 15. Yorkshire all out 192. Hmmm.... let’s see what Lancs can do with that. Fearing an early wicket and the Hass show.

A wicket for Moeen at New Road, Steve Davies for 72. And no golden day for Bell, alas, lbw for 8. Trott replaces him.

And so it came to pass that Jordan Clark runs in, with his first ball of a new spell, whips out his tablecloth and has Brooks caught at cover for 14. Yorkshire 166-9.

A wicket at Lord’s brings in Bell - ardently wishing that his golden touch continues long into this golden summer.

Surrey on the march at Trent Bridge - 37 for 0. Stoneman 28 not out, including 6 fours.

From Raf:

At Guildford Southern Vipers have just lost 2 wickets in an over in their chase of 142, and they’re big wickets too - Danni Wyatt and Suzie Bates both back in the hutch thanks to Marizanne Kapp. Bates went to a Lizelle Lee juggle-catch - the ball was hit so hard it knocked her over and she fumbled it, but eventually managed to cling on. 32-2 now after 5 overs.

Over in Taunton Western Storm, having been 0-1, are now cruising along at 10 an over - India’s Smriti Mandhana currently 45 not out off 17 balls! Time to find a TV if you can as that’s the match that Sky are televising today.

Tea-time scores

Division One

Worcestershire v Somerset: Somerset 214-4 (Abell 49 not out; Davies 50 not out)

Nottinghamshire v Surrey: Notts 210 all out (Morkel 4-60)

Lancashire v Yorkshire: Yorkshire 165-8 (Lyth 70; Clark 3-40 including hat-trick)

Division Two

Middlesex v Warwickshire: Middx 236 all out (Holden 48; Wright 3-48, Hannon-Dalby 3-41, Sidebottom 3-34)

Kent v Leicestershire: Kent 104 all out (Raine 3-39, Chappell 3-14; Leicestershire 53-4 - still playing

Gloucestershire v Durham: Gloucestershire 218-3 (Roderick 67 not out, Higgins 59 not out; Stokes 2-39 -plus one retired hurt-)

Derbyshire v Northamptonshire: Derbyshire 222 for 8 (Wilson 60; Sanderson 5-40)

Lunch-time score

Sussex v Glamorgan - 114 for 1 (Wells 48 not out)

As tea looms around the counties, but not yet at Old Trafford, an update from Raf on the latest happenings in the KSL:

At Guildford Surrey Stars have done a good job of recovering to 141-9 at the end of their 20 overs, after being 29-4 at the end of the powerplay. That recovery was spearheaded by 20-year-old Sophia Dunkley, who made a 42-ball 66 before being caught at deep midwicket. A brilliant innings and just what Stars needed - she’s certainly doing what she intended and making a name for herself in this competition. Southern Vipers have a ridiculous amount of firepower in their batting so it’s difficult to see them not chasing that down, but at least Dunkley’s made a game of it.

Out in the West Country Australia’s Delissa Kimmince has also hit 50, for Yorkshire Diamonds in Taunton, as they finish their 20 overs on 162-5 v reigning champions Western Storm.

Meanwhile up in Southport Lancashire Thunder (current holders of the KSL wooden spoon) have been rather embarrassingly bowled out for 72 by Loughborough Lightning - Jenny Gunn finishing with 3-10. Not the start to the competition they will have been hoping for...

A wicket at Hove - Salt for 48. And 53 not out for Gary Wilson at Chesterfield. Derby 214 for 8 and scrambling away.

Never mind, for a moment, Jordan Clark, how about Darren Stevens? Top-scorer then 1-10 with power to add, I’ll wager more than a brace, and doing it for fortysomethings everywhere. Leicestershire 39/2

Gurney and Ball putting on a bat-throwing 45, and counting, in a last-wicket stand against Surrey, Notts 210/9; and James Fuller 66 not out shepherding the Middlesex tail 227/9.

Wrist-watch: Livingstone previously snapped both wrists going for a catch when playing for England Under-15s. As they mended he discovered it was easier to bowl off-spin; when they were fully recovered he was able to bowl legspin again. Now? Who knows - but a cruel blow after being in such sensational form, and leaving Lancashire in a pickle for the remainder of the Blast.

Another one down at Old Trafford: Patterson c Jennings b Bailey 22. And another! A wicket for Anderson at last - caught Jennings again, at slip, and a handsome round of applause for Lyth, who batted beautifully for his 70 - 119 balls, 12 x 4

More from Raf:

Dane van Niekerk having some fun here at Guildford and getting the home crowd able to finally do some flag-waving - she’s 28* with Stars having recovered to 62-4 after 11.

Spare a thought for Lancashire Thunder, though, who are suffering their own collapse up in Southport against Loughborough Lightning - 5 down after 8 overs with only 36 runs on the board. Premier overseas signing Australia’s Nicole Bolton has, embarrassingly, gone for a duck while England’s Jenny Gunn has just taken 2 wickets in an over.

Derbyshire lose another couple - 183/8: Viljoen and Palladino. Sanderson 5-40. And Sussex refuse to play skittles - 55/0.

Lyth meanwhile sits pretty on 66 off 111 balls at the ground where he has both his highest first-class and one-day scores. I’m pretty sure we had him in our can’t-get-a-run-holiday-in-the-sun list mid-season. Bravo for his yorkshire grit.

Yikes, Liam Livingstone in trouble here at Old Trafford. Fielding at slip, he was hit awkwardly/dropped a ball from Lyth. Walks off the field holding his left wrist and looking wretched.

Updated

The eleventh wicket of the day falls at Canterbury. Harry Dearden for a three-ball duck. Leicestershire 15/1.

Holden misses out on fifty at Lord’s , lbw to Patel for 48. Middx 189/8

Tom Moores and Luke Fletcher, youth and wile, rescuing Notts from a pigs-ear of an innings against Surrey; Broad the latest Morkel casualty, caught for 3. Notts 163/7.

More from Raf:

At Guildford, the Surrey Stars are in all kinds of trouble with their top 4 (Lizelle Lee, Bryony Smith, Sarah Taylor and Nat Sciver) all back in the hutch. For Southern Vipers, England quick Tash Farrant currently has figures of 2-11 and at 19-4 after 5 overs. Dane van Niekerk and Sophia Dunkley have some rebuilding to do. Dunkley was hoping for an opportunity to stake her claim for England during KSL but I’m guessing she won’t have expected (or wanted?!) to be doing so quite this early!

And some serenity in the pink ball game. Sussex 45-0 at Hove - Salt 35 not out. Phew.

Derbyshire crawling out of the mire at 161 for 6, Gary Wilson 23 not out, Hardus Viljoen 8 not out. Hoseien out for a nicely-played 58, one of Sanderson’s 4-40.

An update from Raf Nicholson who isn’t at Taunton but is at Guildford:

Southern Vipers captain Suzie Bates has won the toss and chosen to field first.

The big team news is that England left-arm quick Katie George is out of today’s game with a sore hamstring. Sussex’s Paige Scholfield will make her Vipers debut in her place. Otherwise all is as expected.

Teams:

Surrey Stars - Bryony Smith, Lizelle Lee, Sarah Taylor, Nat Sciver, Dane van Niekerk, Sophia Dunkley, Marizanne Kapp, Laura Marsh, Aylish Cranstone, Mady Villiers, Grace Gibbs

Southern Vipers - Tammy Beaumont, Danni Wyatt, Mignon du Preez, Suzie Bates, Sara McGlashan, Paige Scholfield, Amelia Kerr, Tash Farrant, Arran Brindle, Carla Rudd, Fi Morris

There’s a good smattering of spectators, some of whom have brought their own chairs. It’s hot, and the outfield looks absolutely parched - there’s a tiny speck of green in the middle surrounded by what is basically straw!

Ooops he does it again! Mr golden-balls sticks out his hand to a sharp drive from Adam Lyth, gets his fingers to the ball and somehow deflects it diagonally backwards onto the stump and Gary Ballance is run-out for 0. Yorkshire 86/6.

Gloucestershire make comparatively serene progress at Cheltenham - 120-3. Roderick 27 not out, Higgins 5 not out; Bracey retired injured for 3, Hammond out for 51.

Kent are all out, for a miserable 104, an innings of 8 single-figures scores. Mr evergreen, Darren Stevens top scorer, 38 not out. Three wickets a piece for Raine and Chappell

And in other games ... Somerset have lost both of their lunchtime batsmen, Hildreth for 57, Azhar for 37, both to Dillon Pennington. Somerset 115/4.

Notts have lost Wessells for 23, a second wicket for Dernbach, and are currently 128/6.

Max Holden and James Fuller have given Middlesex a timely boost with an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 83 to take Middx to 159/7

Blow me - Ballance watches a delivery from Onions out of the hand and carries on watching as it swings in and plops off his bails. Yorkshire 78-5.

Do you want more stats? Of course you do. There were 30,332 first-class runs in that hat-trick - at a combined average 47.8. And 14,639 Test runs.

From Chris Waters of the Yorkshire Post. Ken Higgs’s hattrick victims:Ken Taylor, Ray Illingworth and Jimmy Binks. Aye, but Yorkshire still won that match by an innings.

Hmmm, I can’t find hat-trick ball three as a single entity, so here is the holy trinity:three in one

Hat-trick ball two:

Updated

Division One

Worcestershire v Somerset: Somerset 95/2 (Azhar 29 not out, Hildreth 50 not out)

Nottinghamshire v Surrey: Notts 94/5 (Morkel 2-17)

Lancashire v Yorkshire: 61-4 (Lyth 31 not out, Clark 3-13 including HAT-TRICK)

Division Two

Middlesex v Warwickshire: Middx 103-7 (Sidebottom 3-16)

Kent v Leicestershire: Kent 73-6 (Chappell 3-14)

Gloucestershire v Durham: 80-2 (Hammond 36 not out; Stokes 2-10 -plus one retired hurt-)

Derbyshire v Northamptonshire: Derbyshire 109/4 (Hosein 41; Sanderson 3-35)

Sussex v Glamorgan - start 2pm.

Hat-trick ball one:

Lunch. Well, well. Round-up to follow as a bashful Clark waves his cap and gets applauded off the pitch.

That hat-trick in full as soon as I can find the wickets - the first Roses hattrick at Old Trafford since 1933, and only the second ever Roses hattrick by a Lancastrian. Anyone want to nominate a better one?

OOOh a good shout against Ballance from the first ball of Clark’s next over.

A HAT-TRICK! Bairstow caught at third slip!! Jordan Clark zooms over the out-field.

Root, Williamson, Bairstow - not a bad hatrick Jordan Clark!

Yorkshire 59/4.

First Roses Hattrick for a Lancastrian since Ken Higgs in 1968 at Headingley.

AND WILLIAMSON OUT NEXT BALL! LBW for a golden duck, trapped on the crease by Clark. Is the Yorkshire batting line-up a paper army?

First fifty of the day to James Hildreth at New Road! Everywhere else, except Cheltenham, batting is a struggle. And a WICKET at OLD TRAFFORD. And it’s ROOT! Playing half forward to a ball from Jordan Clark, which nipped back a bit, lbw for 22. Yorkshire 59/2 - Lankies with the upper hand. Kane Williamson with ten minutes to bat before lunch.

Updated

It’s all happening: Middlesex 90/7; Kent 68/6.

Here, Lyth leaves a ball from Anderson that jags in sharply and misses the top of off stump by a demi-semi millimetre, then drives the next one for a crisp and beautiful boundary. I don’t want to jinx anyone so early in the day, but he really is looking in quite charming touch.

Ah, I see Will Fraine was making his Championship debut - hard luck to the boy, but he’ll be out to many a worse bowler than Morkel.

And here comes Onions from the Anderson End after miserliness personified from Tom Bailey: 6-3-7-0. And that’s a wicket! Brook played on to Onion’s second ball, out for 6! Stumps demolished. Yorkshire 24/1. Enter Root.

Graham Onions of Lancashire celebrates.

Updated

Add four, minus one: Middlesex now 70/6, Simpson for a duck, a second for Sidebottom. And a couple for Surrey’s big man - Libby and Fraine both out in Morkel’s 6th over. Notts 62/3.

Bailey’s miserly run ends after 26 successive dot balls; and gentility spoiled at Cheltenham where Bracey retires hurt on 3 after being hit on the arm by a ball from Ben Stokes.

Updated

What a bargain!

Look away and wince - Middlesex now 66/5: Dawid Malan fluffing his pre-Test lines, out for 6; Eoin Morgan a second for Hannon-Dalby, for 5.

A wicket for Zak Chappell at Canterbury, Denly for 5. Kent 48-4.

At OT, Tom Bailey keeping it tight, hasn’t conceded a run since his first delivery .

Anderson adding to Brook’s Roses education with a bit of casual sledging

A wicket for Stokes at Cheltenham. Gloucestershire 41 for 1. Proper creeket here, Yorkshire 11-0 off six overs. Young Harry Brook learning the power of the leave.

Not a good morning for Middlesex, Nick Gubbins joins the tumbling dominoes, b Oliver Hannon-Dalby for 26, 53-3. And at Chesterfield, another players falls under the frowning gaze of the crooked spire, Hughes b Buck 12. Derby 64/4.

This is a smashing read from Adam Collins - ahead of the KSL . A year tomorrow from the Women’s World Cup win at Lord’s, he spoke to four of the winners about how life/women’s cricket changed as a result.

Anderson, brown hair restored, opens for Lancashire at the Statham end. Uneventful and a little wayward. Not a bad walk-in crowd - 2000 or so cagouled souls.

And Kent too! Bell-Drummond gone for 9, Heino Kuhn for a two-ball duck - Kent 25-2, both wickets to Ben Raine.

Might we say county batsmen are red-ball wobbly today?

And Marcus Trescothick’s first post-metatarsal outing for Somerset has not ended well, lower limbs again letting him down, lbw to Luke Wood for 6. Edward Byrom also out, for 5, so Azhar Ali out in the middle with Somerset wobbling at 11/2.

Here, Yorkshire have won the toss and will bat in front of 62 former players gathered for Former Players Day in the pavilion. Joe Mennie is not included, we think he failed a fitness test this morning.

A pause for the first shortbread of the morning, and five wickets have fallen around the country:

Steven Mullaney out for a two ball duck at Trent Bridge, Notts 16-1, a wicket for Dernbach.

At Lords, Paul Sterling c Bell b Wright for 16; Middlesex 23-1 and Derbyshire are having a shocker, now 23 for 3 with three wickets for Ben Sanderson, Slater, Godleman and Madsen all back in the pavilion.

So we have three games in Division One and five in Division Two.

Division One

Worcestershire v Somerset - A spin off between Moeen and Leach and Bess, a chance for Joe Clarke to show his Test credentials and a County Blog medallion for anyone who spots Ed Smith. Bottom of the table Worcestershire are down but not out, Somerset have lost the remarkable Matt Renshaw but gained Pakistan opening batsman Azhar Ali.

Nottinghamshire v Surrey - first v second, Surrey are at full strength, Notts have lost Ross Taylor.

Lancashire v Yorkshire: start delayed till 11.45 (see below)

Division Two

Middlesex v Warwickshire - Chris Woakes returns after injury, Malan could do with runs before the Test team announcement on Thursday. Can the Bell-Trott run-glut continue?

Kent v Leicestershire - a big one, with both teams doing well. Kent have lost Matt Henry but gained Sam Billings.

Gloucestershire v Durham - the second four-day game at the College ground at the Cheltenham Festival. Wood and Stokes are back; Gloucestershire will include 21 year old James Bracey who has made 3 hundreds in his first 24 first-class innings and is highly rated by Paul Edwards! Placate Paul and keep an eye on him.

Derbyshire v Northamptonshire - a return to lovely Chesterfield - where the runes are more cheerful than the match between these two a couple of years ago which was a wash-out due to drainage problems with the duck pond at Queens Park.

Sussex v Glamorgan - start 2pm. Can Usman Khawaja score runs with the pink ball?

And, of course, we have the start of the KSL - which the Blog will also be covering thanks to Raf Nicholson who will be tapping away at Taunton.

Updated

Hello! Not sure if anyone is out there, sandwiched as this round is between Blast fireworks, but welcome to a little Championship July filip.

Here at Old Trafford where a hosepipe ban is due in 10 days, we have the first Roses Championship fixture of the season - so inevitably, we have rain, and approximately 21,000 fewer spectators than turned up for the T20 game on Friday night.

When the players do get out on the pitch, both sides are at full strength, looking far stronger than two teams should who are facing a relegation battle. Lancashire have Jimmy Anderson, Jos Buttler, Keaton Jennings, Liam Livingstone and Graham Onions ... and it looks as if they are sticking with Hameed.

Yorkshire include Jonny Bairstow, plus Joe Root and Kane Williamson , third and fourth rated Test batsmen in the world.

Seats are going fast - as they dismantle the temporary stand - and Lancashire are still kicking their rival rose when he’s down . The methods may change, but the enmities remain the same...
