I’m watching the Old Trafford ground-staff cover the pitch wearing hoods, anoraks, waterproof trousers and woolly hats on what has been a bitterly cold day of cricket round the country. Surrey collapsed rather dramatically in that final session, losing 5 for 29 in 14.1 overs, still well short of the follow-on. Four wickets for Tom Bailey to finish off a rather good day for him. Close of play scores to follow v shortly.
Updated
WICKET. Pope b Bailey 17; Surrey 218 for 7. First ball with the new ball.
Getting a bit tasty here: Curran lbw, going back, Livingstone 9. Surrey 217-6. Gloucestershire only 59 runs short with four wickets in hand and now bad light has stopped play with a terrible forecast for tomorrow. And bad light has stopped play at Taunton too, with Yorkshire 49 for 1. And forgotten Leicester merrily going along at 260 for 5, Reece 3-58.
Another one down at Hove, Gloucestershire 95 for 6.
Surrey 202-5, Ben Foakes lbw Clark, who’d only just come on for this spell, 34
It is tense at Hove. Gloucestershire 91 for 5, need 76.
And another WICKET at OT: Elgar, nibbling, caught Vilas (subs wkt) b Bailey 34 Surrey 171 for 4.
Rain has stopped play at Taunton where Yorkshire have been frozen at 44 for 1, needing another 277 to win. Notts are 158 for 5, where I had somehow missed Ross Taylor getting fifty. He’s out now. Two wickets for Tongue, three for Leach. Leicestershire 214 for 4, a solid start from their top three and three wickets for Reece.
And another one down at Hove, Gloucestershire 76 for 5. This looks terminal.Van zyl 3 for 4.
Updated
Gloucestershire in a bit of trouble at 69 for 4 now, 2 wickets apiece for van Zyl and Robinson.
At OT, and Alex Davies is off the field with an injury to his right hand to be replaced with the gloves by Villas, wearing Mahmood’s shirt, to add to the confusion. A WICKET at New Road, Roderick for 10. Gloucs 69 for 2, need another 98 to win.
Gloucestershire fair flying at Hove, 58 for 1, only need 109. A boundary-strewn 37 not out to Benny Howell.
Hands over eyes Yorkies: Yorkshire have lost their first wicket 26/1; Brook c Tresothick b Davey 15.
A WICKET at Old Trafford: Borthwick edges and caught at the second/third attempt by Davies off Onions. Surrey 131 for 3.
Love to think this (below) was a little plug for the NHS at Lord’s. And as I write no wickets have fallen since tea.
At Lord's, as Aneurin Donald came out to bat for Glamorgan, the announcer gave his name as Aneurin Bevan. Donald/Bevan was out first ball, to leave Glamorgan unhappily placed on 34 for four

Palf, I had forgotten... and, but, also, you must read this wacky but brilliant piece Jonathan Liew wrote for The Nightwatchman about the very same mural, see here (small admission I work for them, so that is a bit of a plug)

More from Vic:
“Somerset all out for 200, ideal for those mathematically challenged. So the lead is 320; Yorkshire need 321 to win. Abell the last man out for 82, swinging wildly like new captains do. He need not have done that...but this has been an excellent innings, which will make captaincy easier.”
And more...
HOW GOOD IS TIM MURTAGH?! 🔥@tjmurtagh gets his fourth of the innings, and his 2nd in 2 deliveries, this time getting Donald for 0! 👏👏👏

And that’s Burns OUT, an expansive swish outside off, edged to Davies off Bailey for 28. Surrey 100-2
And it seems to be getting a bit murky all round the country. Nottinghamshire 59 for 2; Somerset 200 for 9 where Abell is rather magnificently 82 not out, lead 320. Off for bad light again at Hampshire, 241 for 4. Surrey now 100 for 1; Borthwick and Burns, hare and tortoise. Gloucestershire 9-0 needing 158 to win. Glamorgan 34 for 2. Leicestershire 111 for 1, 52 not out for Horton.

And with a square drive, Borthwick brings up his fifty, seven fours, 78 balls. It’s been a slowish passage of play, while he and Burns have taken what Lancashire could throw and them and guided Surrey from a rocky start to the heady fields of moderation. Nothing untoward seems likely to happen now on this pitch...
And they’re back on at the Ageas but Amla heading in again, c Foster b Siddle 52. Somerset 172 for 8. Sussex 204 all out, Wiese not out 27, a lead of 166; three each for Worrall and Higgins. And Carberry has been out at Grace Road for 45; Leicestershire 95 for 1.

Now this isn’t strictly cricket, but I’ve just been sent an adorable picture of romeo’s puppies. Here there has been an influx of men in duffle coats prepared to sit through the icy gale and watch Surrey grind it out before heading off to the other Old Trafford.
From Vic, woollen socks firmly pulled up, in the Taunton press-box:
“There are seven men in our press box and we are the lucky ones - because it’s relatively warm and cozy here in the palatial Somerset Stand. I’ve just looked out the window at the those in the stands. There are all inside blankets and balaclavas; the hoods of their jackets are up and every button is in use. They all deserve medals and hot soup. But noone wants to go because this is an intriguing game, which is nearly always the case when wickets keep falling. As I write Somerset are 148-7, a lead of 268.”
A fifty for Abell at Taunton and Sussex 184 for 8 but a lead of 146 surely not enough....and at wee Grace Road Leicestershire still haven’t lost a wicket - 48 for 0. Nice to see Wasim Khan is chair of the new ECB men’s county cricket working party - a man who really cares about the Championship. Lights on here at Old Trafford
Updated
A third wicket for Brooks at Taunton, Somerset now 129 for 7. At OT Surrey have moved on to 55 for 1; bad light is keeping them in for a long lunch at the Ageas Bowl; Middlesex 194 all out, Hogan 5-49. While down at Grace Road, Leicestershire have hit the heady heights of 38 for 0.
A wicket falls at Sussex: 154 for 7 - a third for Higgins, Robinson lbw for 10; and one at Lord’s, Middlesex 194 for 9, a fourth for van der Gugten
On the one hand, we have play at Grace Road: Leicestershire 3 for 0. On the other, play is abandoned at Canterbury which may be a blessing for Pakistan players yet to acclimatise to the harsh pointy fingers of the English spring.
Lunchtime report from Vic:
“Never dull at Taunton, where Somerset are taking lunch at 113-6 . This represents quite a recovery from 24-4. But this game moves at a bewildering pace, every ball an event, which is how we like it in the 21st century. One problem for Gary Ballance has been that Yorkshire’s back up bowling has not been so testing as Somerset’s was yesterday. For the home side and their supporters there is some relief that captain Tom Abell has scored some runs At the break he is 36 not out, which equates to an unbeaten 80 in normal “mid-summer” conditions.”
Scores on the doors at lunch:
Division One
Somerset v Yorkshire:Somerset 113 for 6 (Abell 36 not out; Coad 3-35), lead by 233
Lancashire v Surrey: Surrey 49 for 1 (Burns 21 not out, Borthwick 26 not out; Onions 1-14) Lancashire 439 for 9 declared (Clark 78, Mennie 68 not out; Virdi 4-80, Dernbach 3-93)
Hampshire v Essex: Hampshire 223 for 2 (Adams 81 not out, Amla 52 not out)
Worcestershire v Nottinghamshire: Worcestershire 110 all out (Clarke 42; Fletcher 5-27, Broad 3-28)
Division Two
Sussex v Gloucestershire: Sussex 154 for 6 (van Zyl 44, Finch 38 not out, Robinson 10 not out; Higgins 2-35, M Taylor 2-48) Sussex lead by 116 runs
Middlesex v Glamorgan: Middlesex 193 for 8 (Eskinazi 94,Rayner 13 not out; Hogan 4-43)
Northants v Durham: play abandoned for the day.
Leicestershire v Derbyshire: no play yet today, play due to start at 1.45pm.
And another down at New Road: Worcestershire 103 for 8. A second for Broad.

Just been told that the highest temperature forecast for tomorrow is 6 degrees....and in the press-box everyone has their coat on. A bowling change here, Livingstone on for Bailey at the Statham End. Surrey 31/1; Burns, whose bottom-jutting stance looks like something out of a maths book, 15, Borthwick 16.
Another one down for Worcestershire, a fourth for Fletcher, Head lbw for 33. Worcestershire 87 for 7.
And a huge lbw appeal turned down at Old Trafford by Onions against Borthwick on 7. Lucky days.
Also, a mini-clip of Virdi bowling for anyone who hasn’t seen him

Tentative recoveries round the country as rain stops play at Lord’s with Middlesex 152 for 5, Eskinazi 84 not out.
Somerset 70 for 4; Sussex 95 for 4; Worcestershire 85 for 5 (Head 32 not out); Hampshire, an almost serene, 220 for 2 (Jimmy Adams 79 not out, Hashim Amla 51 not out ). And Surrey 5-1
It’s looking cold out there, all three slips, gully, no in fact eight of the fielders, have hands shoved deep in their pockets between deliveries
And WICKET - Stoneman bowled round his legs by Onions in the second over for 0. Surrey 2 for 1.

After being 23 for 3 , Lancashire had four partnerships of above 69, with a highest first-class score for Tom Bailey. Great tenacity and the Surrey bowling wasn’t easy pickings. Intrigued to see what happens next.
Clarke’s out at New Road, for 42, Worcestershire 68 for 4, no make that 68 for 5, Rhodes out second ball. And Sussex now 80 for 4.

The Lancies decide to swing the bat, and Bailey is out c Dunn b Virdi 66. Lancashire declare, DECLARE DO YOU HEAR, on 439 for 9. Four wickets for Virdi, Mennie 68 not out. Well, well.
And so John Crossland and Alex Watson’s 136 year ninth-wicket record slides quietly off the slipway to be replaced by Mennie and Bailey’s 100 partnership off 124 balls. They now hold the record for the ninth-wicket for either side in Surrey v Lancs games. My head hurts.
A fourth wicket for Hogan at Lord’s, Stirling for 1, with Middlesex now 106-5 - but Eskinazi batting well for 65. At New Road Joe Clarke leads the counter-attack 34 not out - 6 fours!
Meanwhile things progress serenely along at Old Trafford: fifty for Joe Mennie, from 90 balls, his second consecutive half-century. And now Tom Bailey too: 52 including 8 fours. Lancs 408/8. If they get to 418 they will break the ninth wicket partnership record against Surrey, set in 1882....
What-ho! 24 for 4 at Taunton. Hildreth b Brooks for 10; Bartlett c Hodd b Coad 4. Coad 2-18, Brooks 2-6.
As a wicket goes down at Lord’s - Cartwright b Hogan 5 - and bad light stops play at Hove, even with the floodlights on, some common sense and super geekery from VIC:
“Good morning Tanya, good morning everyone from a chilly, dry Taunton. Already a wicket has fallen. Marcus Trescothick has been caught at second slip off Ben Coad, Matt Renshaw has walloped one ball over mid-wicket off Brooks and looks as if he is intending to play his shots again.
Yesterday I got in touch with Andrew Samson about Renshaw’s six hitting, one off the mark, another to reach 50, another for his 100. In the box this morning we have Steve James, who confirmed, without the need for too much deliberation, that he never did this.
As ever Samson does not disappoint. He says Shingirai Masakadza did it in a Logan Cup match for Mountaineers v Mashonaland Eagles in Harare last November on his way to 142 from 90 balls with 13 sixes. Not many people know that (until now).
Perhaps more relevantly Renshaw has just been bowled by a swinger from Brooks. 11-2. Feels like this could finish today.”
Updated
Yikes - Renshaw is out at Taunton b Brooks for 8.
Updated
Another down at New Road - a wicket an over at the moment - they’ll be lunching early. Not a happy first home game so far. D’Oliveria c Taylor b Ball 3. Worcestershire 3/3.
And in a totally different world: a placid fifty partnership comes up at Old Trafford between Mennie and Bailey.
For anyone contemplating rolling up to Grace Road- there will be a further inspection at midday.
Ah, and another at New Road. A wicket for Broad: Fell lbw for 0. Worcestershire 3 for 2 - another one of those days?
Things are looking up - we have play at Lord’s, New Road, Old Trafford, Hove, The Ageas Bowl and Taunton.
At New Road, the long wait is over only for Worcestershire to lose a wicket to the fifth ball of the innings. Mitchell b Ball 0. Broad is now starting his first spell of the season. And a wicket at Taunton:Trescothick has fallen to Coad for two
Good morning from Old Trafford where a chilly breeze is whistling merrily but the sun is set fair. The prospects of play round the country are mixed.
Play has been abandoned for the day at Wantage Road - not a ball bowled there yet. They’re hoping to play at New Road, the blowers are out and fingers are crossed for an 11am start. It has stopped raining at Grace Road but there will be a delayed start. They’re hopeful at the moment of starting at 11am at Lord’s
Play will start on time at Hove, Old Trafford, The Ageas Bowl, and Taunton.
Plenty to see yesterday, particularly Renshaw’s pyrotechnics at Taunton followed by wickets galore there and at Hove. Then Lancashire’s steadfast recovery from 23 for 3, a cracking late-evening 78 from Jordan Clark and superb fielding from Surrey. And today? Maybe Alastair Cook and Stuart Broad at last...
And finally, as I walked out of the ground at 8 o’clock last night, there in the nets was Haseeb Hameed. Crack, crack, crack, crack. That, combined with the news that Simon Kerrigan is going to concentrate on coaching rather than playing, illustrates the precariousness and the heartache that comes with being a professional cricketer. Good luck to all, today.
