Roundup and results
With half the season over, Surrey increased their lead at the top of the Championship table after a seven-wicket win against Yorkshire at Scarborough. Surrey have won five of their first seven matches and are sniffing at the title for the first time since 2002, while Yorkshire fall into the relegation zone.
Mark Stoneman fell early but Rory Burns and then Scott Borthwick ushered Surrey to the target of 228. Burns was out for 97 after becoming the first man to pass 700 first-class runs in the season. The only man above him in the Division One averages is teammate Ollie Pope.
Surrey had conceded a first-innings deficit and it was their fight-back that pleased Burns. “It’s easier when you’re driving the game,” the captain said. “But the way we came from behind and that run chase was very pleasing.”
Neither team play another Championship game until 22 July when Yorkshire come to Old Trafford for the Roses match boosted by Kane Williamson and the return of their miscellaneous England players; Surrey travel to Trent Bridge.
Ryan Patel’s complaint of racist abuse by a member of the Yorkshire crowd on Wednesday is being investigated. The ECB said: “We are aware of the allegations and we are working with the counties to establish the facts.”
At Old Trafford the game ended in a high-scoring draw on a boiling hot day. There was a maiden century for Hampshire’s 21-year-old Joe Weatherley, who batted doggedly for six and a quarter hours for his 126 not out against Lancashire. The day ended aptly, with a forward defensive. Hampshire have one day to recover before their Royal London Cup Final against Kent at Lord’s.
Glamorgan folded quickly at Sophia Gardens against Northamptonshire, losing six wickets before lunch. Seekkuge Prasanna finished with four for 49. Northants jetted off the bottom of Division Two with their second successive victory.
In the other pink-ball games, Essex set Somerset 314 runs to win at about six an over at Chelmsford. Somerset took up the challenge but slumped to 116 for five with 22 overs gone before stubborn resistance from Tom Abell and Lewis Gregory secured them a draw. Durham succumbed by 86 runs at The Riverside as Warwickshire earned the win that took them to the top of Division Two. Jeetan Patel took six for 83. Warwickshire had declared on 185 for nine after losing four wickets for three runs, including three in one Ryan Pringle over.
At Trent Bridge, Joe Clarke hit a magnificent 177 not out as Worcestershire clung on for a draw against Nottinghamshire. Stuart Broad’s eight overs were wicketless. There were four wickets apiece for Hampshire’s Liam Dawson and Reece Topley as England Lions beat West Indies A by nine wickets to earn a place in the Tri-Series final against India A at The Oval on Monday.

Both Worcester and Durham wobbling, four wickets down. I’m going to have to leave you to follow them, and keep an eye on Chelmsford, while I write up. Thanks again for a fabulous few days - enjoy your month off!
It ends with a forward defensive: hands shaken, backs patted. Lovely to see the Lancashire team all congratulate young Weatherley, unbeaten on 126. Well played!

Borthwick out for 62, but Surrey are licking victory’s boots.
Gosh, jut seen that Alsop wicket again - it turned hugely out of the footmarks.

Something had to give. Alsop bowled by one that turned sharply from Parry, for 33. Hampshire 161-4.
This video of Notts players walking down the staircase is more interesting than the cricket at OT right now. Weatherley 79, Alsop 29. Hampshire 157-3. Time for a Hants-up.
PLAY | Notts make their way out to begin the final day of this day/night clash with @WorcsCCC, who resume on 43-0.

Anyone remember Tim Linley? Anyway, this is what he’s doing now - funky coffees in Leeds. On the unlikely chance that Ed Smith, who loves a proper coffee, is reading, - Ed, head for Coffee on the Crescent when you’re talent-spotting at Headingley.

And fifty for Scott Borthwick as Surrey power towards victory at Scarborough. They’ll have a huge (pauses to do maths) advantage when we hit the late-summer rounds. And all this at nothing like full-strength.
Lunchtime scores
Old Trafford: Lancashire 411 v Hampshire 451 and 135-3 (Weatherley 63 not out) Hampshire lead by 175 runs.
Scarborough: Yorkshire 342 and 152 v Surrey 267 and 189-2 (Burns 97, Borthwick 45 not out) Surrey need 39 runs to win.
RESULT
Sophia Gardens: Glamorgan 254 and 200 (Khawaja 38, Hogan absent injured; Prasanna 4-49) v Northamptonshire 281 and 406-9dec. Northants win by 233 runs.
That’s lunch. It looks like Lancashire’s small chance of pushing for victory has gone, with a missed stumping and a sharp lbw shout turned down. The groundstaff mow the spare strips and brush the wicket. And thoughts turn to other games. Lunch scores to follow.
Glamorgan thinking about passing 200... 199 for 8.
Don’t make me a news reporter. The smoke coming over the shoulder of the ground is not from the small fire in Manchester but a large fire in a factory yard in Rochdale.
And, after three hours at the crease, Weatherley passes fifty. Hampshire 109/3.
And, I forgot to say, Rory Burns is out for 97 (one for the conversion-rate conspiracy-theorists) - Surrey 152/2, need 76. Too late for the Yorkists....
Glamorgan seven down, Khawaja still top scorer with 38. A win for Northants will send the basement-dwellers leaping up the table.
Lancashire have had a couple of good shouts this morning, but the umpires aren’t having it, dreaming, perhaps, about handshakes at 4.50 and a scrub-down before the England game.
And Lancashire miss a stumping against Alsop on 0.
Don’t miss the women’s double-header at Bristol this afternoon. First South Africa v New Zealand, then England v New Zealand.
And in the Lions game, West Indies A are 53 for 3 at drinks, Reece Topley 3-12. Liam Parkinson on the bench again.
And a smoke update. Apologies, the smoke isn’t from Saddleworth but a tower block on fire in central Manchester, near Victoria Station.

And Rory Burns becomes the first man to pass 700 Championship runs this season, 88 not out, Surrey need just 95.
Billowing smoke approaching Old Trafford from Saddleworth (we were woken in the night with the smell of burning). And Northeast, who has had a wretched game, bowled by Jordan Clark for 10. Hampshire 86-3.
Great pic from NASA satellite taken 1pm today. The smoke trail from the Saddleworth fire can be seen stretching across Greater to Manchester to the Irish Sea. pic.twitter.com/xyNGhc0msm

Oh Glamorgan, the bell tolleth. van der Gugten lbw Prasanna 6. He now has 3-6. Glamorgan 128/5
Apologies, while I faffed about with that Stoneman was out, lbw to Coad for 32. Surrey 99/1, need 129. Will the Championship leaders stumble into Scarborough’s capriciousness?
No wickets yet this morning .... which gives me an excuse to slip this into the blog - horrible lack of swifts above my house. We could march under Cricket Lovers for Wildlife?

Good morning!
It’s the last day of County Championship cricket for a while, so let’s clamber into the hammock of geek in that shady spot under the lime tree.
Two games finished yesterday: Kent beat Middlesex to go top of Division 2 and Mohammad Abbas-inspired Leicester whalloped Derbyshire, which leaves us with six.
Surrey made a flying start to their run-chase at Scarborough, with yet another fifty for Rory Burns and where the weather looks set fair
It smells like a high-scoring draw at Old Trafford, on the international pitch of which Kyle Abott told the BBC ‘”Quite a bit of the pace has gone out of it - it was pretty good on day one and two, but the ball’s getting soft very quickly.” A draw on the cards too at Chelmsford, despite Essex losing two late wickets, including the unfortunate Tom Westley pushed up the order because Alastair Cook was unwell (at least he’s got the Riviera)
The loss of Usman Khawaja just before the close at Sophia Gardens means Glamorgan look terminal against Northants and Worcester face an uphill battle at Trent Bridge to bat out the day.
The most intriguing game is at The Riverside where Warwickshire are 152 for 5, 279 ahead of Durham. Another fifty for Jonathan Trott, and three more wickets for Matthew Salisbury.
1️⃣3️⃣9️⃣ runs required!
