County cricket: Lancashire versus Essex evenly poised as rain stops play

An intriguing day at Old Trafford ended with a summer downpour just after half past four. There was a snappy innings from Essex batsman Alastair Cook who played and missed, was dropped at slip on 18, then thundered out some drives. It ended on 58 when he was caught behind off Lancashire’s Joe Mennie.

Cook and Tom Westley had put on 110 for the first wicket, but his dismissal precipitated a collapse of four for 11. Adam Wheater and Ryan ten Doeschate then put on 81 before ten Doeschate was run out by the agile Dane Vilas.

Drama at Taunton, where Ross Taylor saved the Championship leaders Nottinghamshire from first‑innings humiliation as they recovered from 28 for five to 134 against Somerset. Craig Overton took four for 53. Following on, Notts were 112 without loss. Notts trail Somerset by 146 runs. At the Ageas Bowl, Rory Burns continued in Saturday’s lush form, eventually out for 151, to overtake Hashim Amla as the leading Championship run-scorer. In reply Hampshire were 135 all out, with two wickets for Morne Morkel on his Surrey Championship debut, and five for Rikki Clarke.

In Division Two, there was a painstaking, six-hour, unbeaten century from Ian Bell. It was his first century in the County Championship in more than two years. Jonathan Trott was run out for 57 as Warwickshrie eked out a lead of 30. Glamorgan were 55 without loss in their second innings.
Rain truncated play at the Riverside, where Durham made a better fist of their batting. They were 155 for six against Derbyshire at the close, with 67 from Tom Latham.

After nearly two days chasing leather Gloucestershire had a disastrous start to their innings at five for four, before reaching 44 for four. Earlier Kent had declared on 582 for nine, with a century for Joe Denly and 86 for evergreen Darren Stevens, who then grabbed the new ball and took two for 11.

At the County Ground, with first‑innings honours even, there was an unbeaten fifty for the Northamptonshire captain, Alex Wakely, in their second innings against Leicestershire.

Sorry about the silence, was just trying to get my head round a round-up. I see Hampshire have made a hash of it against Surrey, Notts can suddenly play the Taunton pitch and Gloucestershire have had a recovery of sorts. And a huge braying bravo to Scotland - though commiserations to Jonny Bairstow, that innings deserved to finish on the winning side. Thank you for your convivial company and see you tomorrow!

Hampshire are all out against Surrey and are set to follow on, 233 runs behind with eight overs left in the day but the light is not deemed good enough, so that’s all from around the grounds.

Northamptonshire-Leicestershire could be a good finish. Northants are currently 149 ahead with seven wickets remaining in their second innings.

Gloucestershire have not got going against Kent, stumbling to 44-4 after declared on 582-9, which is not to be sniffed at.

Hampshire, on the other hand, are not offering much resistance against Surrey. They are currently 93 for 5, some way behind the visitors’ 368. Roussow is the main positive for Hampshire, currently on 21 not out.

Nottinghamshire’s response to being forced to follow-on against Somerset is going well, with the openers Mullaney and Libby putting on 95 so far for the opening wicker. Recent England debutant Bess is into the attack and has been struck for 23 from his opening four overs.

Durham off for the day too: 155 for 6, a lead of 46 over Derbyshire with four second-innings wickets remaining.

Off for the day at OT, the sun is shining on the field, the grass is bright green, but the rain continues to fall. Searching for the rainbow. The end of an intriguing day. Essex 221 for six, still 80 behind.

This is very cute.

And, while the heavens open all their pent up water at OT, amazing news from the women’s Asia cup final where Bangladesh beat six-time champions India.

Ok, it can’t have been tea at Bristol, as Gloucestershire are already 2 for 1. Howell b Stevens for a duck. Only 590 behind, gents.

Tea at Taunton as Notts are all out for 134. Taylor the last man out for 74, far more than the rest of team put together on a scorecard of five ducks. Four for 53 for Craig Overton.

And Tea at OT with Essex 214 for 6 on a day of dropped catches. Wheater 30 not out, Joe Mennie 3 for 29. Lancs lead by 87. Grey clouds lingering with intent.

Tea at Bristol, with Kent 582 for 9 declared. And in contrast to Notts, a scorecard of two hundreds and three fifties. Craig Miles 4 for 122. Gloucestershire 0 for 0.

And Tea at Durham who in their second innings are 155 for 6, with a lead of 46. Steel not out 6, batting despite his arm injury. The covers have come on, delays expected.

Updated

Tea scores are going to be floating around a bit randomly today, but scones and jam at Hampshire and Edgbaston.

Glamorgan 220. Warwicks 209 for 7 with Ian Bell 85 not out off 217 balls. I think we could settle on steadfast. Lucas Carey 3 for 40.

Surrey 368. Hampshire 32 for 1.

One-man batting line-up Ross Taylor on the attack at Taunton but a run-out for the twinkle-toed Bess, Carter for one. However tasty that run was, I’m not sure Notts should have gone for it. . 258 behind with one wicket in hand.

And some superb fielding by Vilas on his birthday, Ryan ten Doeschate run-out for 43. Essex 211 for 6.

And a new record score for Kent at Bristol - 566 for 8 -still another 40 to go for the all-time Kent record.

A fifty partnership at OT, as the sun comes out and the tide turns again. Ryan ten Doeschate, dropped at slip by Keaton Jennings on 1, has 28, Adam Wheater 17. Lancs have a lead of 120 with 5 Essex wickets remaining. Bell still there at Edgbaston, 80 not out.

And another milestone at Bristol. Another 50, this time for Harry Podmore, the second of his career. Eeek , Durham 128 for 5.

The new favourites?

Duckett out cheaply for the second time in the match; b Raine for 17. Northants 27 for 1. Kent bat on and on... with another fifty, this time for Adam Rouse. And Durham could be in trouble, even more trouble, now Latham is out for 67. 121 for 4 with a lead of 12.

And Surrey 368 all out: a couple of late-in-the-day wickets for Steyn, a five-fer for Edwards.

A mini-collapse at Edgbaston, 164 for four has become 173 for 7. Bell still there on 72; Carey 3 for 35. Durham 104 for 3, still in arears. And Kent pass 500.

Notts lose another in a right balls-up of an innings. Moores lbw Abell for 10, and Root c Renshaw b Abell for the fifth duck of the innings. Now 68 for 7.

Leicestershire all out for 217, a lead of 13 over Northants. Kleinveldt 4 for 51. Durham 89 for 2 - 50 for Tom Latham.

And another one down for Essex. This time Bopara for 6, smart catch by Livingstone at second slip off Mennie. Clouds have come over a bit here, and Essex have lost their way since Cook was out: four wickets for 11 runs.

Ollie Pope 32 not out in Surrey’s 345 for 7. And fifty for Ian Bell as Warwickshire, 160 for 4, draw close to Glamorgan’s 220. Leicester 206 for 8, have a two run lead over Northants. Kent approach 500 on the feather bed at Bristol, Stevens out 11 short of his hundred. And Durham 80 for 1 - much better this time. Latham 45 not out.

And Essex lose another, Lawrence lbw for 2, with an out-of-character send off from Onions. Essex have now lost three for five runs.

Westley bowled! By an absolute corker from Mennie. Umpires busying themselves replacing the bails now. Essex 120 for 3. Just noticed Hameed spitting water out after a drinks break, which I assume is because of Ramadan - does that sounds right?

Some Notts wickets for you

Crikey. Notts now 33 for 5. Overton 3 for 9. Gregory 2 for 20. Four ducks so far.

And a little post-prandial plug for Romeo’s website, for intelligent, sensitive and kind cricket chat when the CCLive is not on, and any other time too. Read about its genesis here

Cook out! Plays back, stuck in his crease, edges and a super catch by Vilas off Mennie for 58. Essex 119 for 2.

And a third wicket for Craig Overton at Taunton as Patel is lbw for a duck. Notts thigh-deep i trouble at 27 for 4.

And in div 2, Leicester 142 for 6, two wickets a piece for Sanderson and Cotton. Durham 36 for 1; Latham 20 not out. Denly approaching a milestone at Bristol . And a specia picture treat for Sunday lunch:

https://twitter.com/jackrussellart/status/1005767189499187200

A second wicket for Edwards at the Ageas Bowl, Foakes lbw for 90. Somerset 392 all out; Davies stranded on 92 not out. Carter 5-113.

And here at OT, Cook and Westley, 43 and 25, looking comfortable. Essex 83 for 1.

Trotty run out for 57, “looking for a quick single.”

And 50 for Trott! He and Bell have put on 80 this morning. Old-timers getting it on in the sunshine. Anyone for a strawberry mivvi? Leicester lose a fifth, Ackerman for 44. 125 for 5. And at Bristol, the runs keep coming: Denly 85 not out, and the evergreen Darren Stevens 58 not out. Durham, better second time round, 29 for 0.

Ah. Rory Burns out, 151, a second wicket for Taylor. Foakes ten short of a century. And, hang on, Steve Davies rattling along to 84 not out as Somerset move to 376 for 9.

Oh Has. Alastair Cook dropped by Hameed off Onions at first slip on 18. Hard, but catchable, and he parried it with both hands. Lancashire 57 for 1.

Updated

Go Rory Burns! 150 not out and still going strong. Leading run-scorer in Div 1 now too. Foakes 90 not out.

By the by, it is a curious design fault that the numbers on the Lancashire players shirts’ are huge but the names are in impossibly tiny font.

Updated

At Bristol, Joe Denly has moves gracefully onwards to 69. Not that I’ve ever actually seen him bat, he just sounds stylish, like Joe Darling does. Bess out for 34 for Somerset.

And a super wicket for Onions, Chopra bowled for 3 to one that zipped back off the pitch. He’s been a good signing for Lancs - hard-working and motivated. Oh, and Alastair Cook off the mark with a four to third man.

Surrey are rare racing along, from 216 for 3, to 246 for 3 in half an hour: Burns now on 130, Foakes on 75.

Early wickets at Durham and Northants. A third wicket for debutant Matthew Salisbury to have Derbyshire 195 for 9; and Gavin Griffiths c Keogh b Kleinveldt for 1 - Leics 82-4.

Rolling back the years:

So that’s a third batting point for Kent and Lancs in the first ten minutes this morning.

Back to the cricket. Lancs lose their last wicket at 301, Tom Bailey for 38. A sweep to deep backward square leg off Harmer where Wagner took a comfortable catch. Harmer 3-35; Cook 3-65.

This is not for people of a queasy disposition but I’ve been sent some pictures of the chips, cheese and gravy meal that was a topic of some interest below the line yesterday. At least I hope that’s what they are...

Another glorious day, in Manchester at least, and we make a happy return to day two of the this Championship round. Saturday was a day of curious fascinations with centuries for Rory Burns, rescuing Surrey after a dreadful start, and another brilliant ton from Matt Renshaw on a good pitch at Taunton, in a game which ended evenly with Dom Bess 7 not out at the end.

At Old Trafford, Lancashire will be pleased with their progress from 59 for 5 to 297 for 9, thanks largely to a 131 run partnership from Jordan Clark and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. They won’t be so pleased with the news that Jimmy Anderson will also miss the next two Championship games as part of a six-week period of rehabilitation on a long-standing right shoulder injury.

In his first bowl of the season leg spinner Josh Poysden, who worked with Stuart MacGill in the winter, took a career-best 5-29 on a turning pitch at Edgbaston as Warwickshire dismissed Glamorgan for 220 before struggling to 24-2 in reply.

It looks like a three-day finish at Durham after 18 wickets fell on the first day, with Derbyshire bowling out Durham’s team of ingénues for 96 before being 175 for 8 at the close. Duanne Olivier took 5 for 20.

At the County Ground, there were best bowling figures for Zak Chappell as Northants were bowled out for 204 with Leicester wobbling at 64 for 3 at the close; while there were runs galore at the Brightside Ground where an unflappable century from Sean Dickson put Kent in a strong position against Gloucestershire as Kent try for their fourth straight championship win.

In other news – spare a thought for 17 year old Cara Murray who yesterday conceded the most runs in a ODI when she took 2 for 119 as New Zealand women chalked up a world record 490 for 4 against Ireland.
