Roundup: Hameed makes overdue century for Lancs

On a day plump with runs some runs meant more than others. For Haseeb Hameed, Lancashire’s 22-year-old batsman, they marked the return of hope, luck and form. With a merry hook over backward square-leg off Middlesex’s Toby Roland-Jones, straight into the Warner Stand for six, Hameed reached his first first-class hundred since August 2016.

That summer he became the youngest batsman to score 1,000 runs for Lancashire and was picked for England’s winter tour, making 82 in his first Test and 59 with a broken finger at Mohali. But then all inexplicably went wrong. Last year in 18 innings for -Lancashire he averaged 9.44, seemingly no longer able to locate his off stump.

Paul Allot, the Lancashire director of cricket, described him as “hanging on by his fingertips at Lancashire”. After 218 against the Loughborough students last week, and 100 in front of the watching Ed Smith to carry Lancashire to a good position, things are looking up.

At the Oval bad light stopped play after Essex fought back against Surrey. Tom Curran saw off Alastair Cook for 11 and when Morné Morkel, with typically tip-toeing acceleration, had Nick Browne lbw, Essex were teetering at 20 for two. But Tom Westley and bright Essex hope Rishi Patel provided able back-up to Dan Lawrence, who was 87 not out at the close. Earlier, Ryan Patel made his maiden first-class 100. Peter Siddle snatched six for 104.

Yorkshire’s batsmen continued to pile on the runs at the Ageas Bowl, finally declaring at 554 for seven - Gary Ballance making 148 and Jack Leaning unbeaten on 77. James Vince, in his new opening berth for Hampshire, fell early for five.

Runs too at Edgbaston where Kent finally declared on 504 for nine after 20 year old Ollie Robinson was out for 143. Dominic Sibley’s 60 held together the Warwickshire reply.

At Trent Bridge, tons from George Bartlett and Tom Abell, in a partnership of 223, put Somerset in a strong position – a first-innings lead of 140 against Nottinghamshire. Stuart Broad took three quick wickets to close the innings, finishing with five for 73.

Another batting paradise at Grace Road – Worcestershire finally declared at 553 for six- with Ben Cox also joining the hundred club. Leicestershire were 180 for four at stumps, Mark Cosgrove having made 67. While at Bristol, sobriety. Derbyshire were bowled out for 291, while James Bracey’s 65 inched Gloucestershire towards parity.

Glamorgan’s centurions fell early but an unbeaten 70 from captain Chris Cooke enabled a 570 for eight declaration. Northamptonshire found batting equally pleasant, Ricardo Vasconcelos 125 not out as they ended the day 234 without loss.

At The Riverside, Luke Wells was left stranded on 98 after Sussex were bowled out for 202, a deficit of 22. Chris Rushworth took four for 41. There was time for Cameron Steel to fall for a duck in Durham’s second innings. Cameron Bancroft was 14 not out at the close.

On a freezing day, a Lord’s, the happiest of conclusions! Bravo Haseeb Hameed. Paul Edwards will be worth reading tonight - I’ll link to him in the morning. That aside, batting seemed more difficult this evening than this morning - with the exception of Sophia Gardens where Northants haven’t lost a wicket in 63 overs. This evening’s happy centurion, Ricardo Vasconcelos. Notts lost late wickets and at the Riverside, they’re still going - Cameron Bancroft really is doing his penance.

That’s it from me - see you all tomorrow morning in the space between Saturday jobs. Thanks, as always, for the comments and anti-jinxes at Lord’s. Good night!

Apologies that it will be a little quiet ATL now as I write up. One quick note though....

Early wickets for Kent at Edgbaston - good old Darren Stevens -, Abell felled but Bartlett still there at Trent Bridge, Tattersall and Leaning still going strong for Yorkshire, Hass going places at Lord’s, Leicester, well, a way to travel yet but not total collapse, Bracey still there for Gloucs. Northants not lost a wicket yet at Sophia Gardens and Luke Wells holding it together for Sussex.

Anyway, what’s been happening? Westley gone to a smart catch by Pope...

Apologies, just been learning about a celebration of cricket on July 8th - 1500 kids (arghghg!) playing cricket on Hackney Marshes organised by Capital Kids Cricket. A fantastic idea, just before the WC semi-finals.

Yorkshire have put on 200 since Joe Root was out, for the loss of only three wickets, now Leaning and Tattersall plot the course.

And Gloucestershire’s James Bracey passes fifty

No up to date pictures of Ben Cox.. as soon as I find one, he’ll be up there....and, arise, Tom Abell new member of the hundred club as Somerset now trail Notts by just six runs. What a partnership! 222 and counting...

Is there such a thing as hundred fatigue?

Wiese out to Rushworth - Sussex 79/7.

While Tom Westley makes batting against Morne Morkel look easy.

Scratches head:

Aha - Kent have declared! 504 for 9 - Robinson 143.

Cox only 8 short of what would be the tenth century (i think) of the round. This new ball has a lot to say for itself, though better weather ergo better pitches. Has the balance gone too far? Will the selectors be able to tell between a good county batsman and a potential Test batsman?

Meanwhile here at The Oval, Morkel is grazing down at fine leg as Essex try their luck against Clarke (with an e)

Just for you

David Horn writes

Afternoon Tanya ... can you let me know, officially, when we’re allowed to get excited again about ‘Schhh ... You Know Who’? He has 49 at time of emailing, and I’d like official confirmation that I can get excited soon. Thanks!

Now HASS HAS GOT FIFTY I can safely say.... yes! Reports from Lancashire are good and, most importantly, where last year luck turned away, this year, according to those at Lord’s, she is back holding his hand. An aside: I think, Ed Smith is there to watch him today.

ps: he’s still in

With six minutes till lunch, it’s looking interesting at Lord’s and - my god, what is happening at The Riverside?

And Morkel does what Morkel does, Browne lbw for 9. Essex 20/2.

Updated

Farewell Alastair. If Morne doesn’t get you... Tom Curran will. Essex 20/1.

Sussex! 49/4, Weighell 2-8. Perhaps the tortoise knew something after all.

Cook confidently leaving Morkel outside his off stump.

In tiny writing ...Hass 36 off 46 balls

Thoughts on OB Jato’s thoughts

I love the way it always looks like high summer on the Sophia Gardens feed. Glammy pass 500!

Morkel accelerates - FAST - off his tippy-toed run up and Cook pushes forward, not entirely convincingly.

Abell and Bartlett both pass fifty for Somerset - the Ali Martin jinx not so powerful this year, hmmm, feel the force George.

OB Jato has a thought!

Random idea: People usually have Test averages at least five runs less than their first-class averages before their international debut. Some others are the rare cases where the average remains the same or increase. Considering a minimum of 14+ innings before their debuts, can’t someone more accomplished than me turn this into a database of how much a player has ‘improved’ in his career from before and after joining the international stage (while factoring in the quality of opposition, of course)? It could be called the ‘Improvement Index’!

Ok, cancel that. Browne is facing the first ball.

Right, hunker down. Morne Morkel to Alastair Cook on a cold April morning ...

Robinson just ten away at Edgbaston and at the Ageas Bowl Gary Ballance fell just short of his 150. A sweetner, a sugar-daddie?

And with that, Morkel edged Harmer to Siddle at mid-off. Surrey 395 all out.

And that’s a hundred for young Patel - his first first-class century for Surrey. Bravo! 277 balls, 17 fours and a gallon of patience.

,
Maiden first-class century: Ryan Patel Photograph: Mitchell Gunn/REX/Shutterstock

Abell and Bartlett, Bartlett and Abel - a drapers opening up on a highs treet near you. Anyway their partnership worth 97 so far as Somerset trail Notts by 130.

This is what CCLive exists for - no?

Updated

Surrey need 20 in two overs to secure maximum batting points...Patel needs 15 for his century... will anyone crack?

Rutherford out too, 123 and that’s a first-class best 83 for Ryan Patel. Derbyshire batting on ...273-9.

Oh and Carlson out too - sad times. That’s all the centurions gone now, except Ballance. Come on Gary, make it a daddy-io

Oh Sussex, Salt out for 2. Sussex 3/1. Durham 224 all out, Robinson 4-54.

Robinson moving on to 81 for Kent, Bartlett and Abell’s partnership reaches 68 at Trent Bridge, and Ballance goes on and on ... 136 not out.

OOh, Hass is in. Middx 265 all out, Bailey 5-67

A little green lung in the middle of the city. Patel, by the way, has 80.

And OH! poor Billy Root too, out without adding a run and at Durham, Ben Raine out for 16. Durham 215/9

And that be out! A fifth wicket for Peter Siddle, Plunkett jabbing down on one that nipped back.

Good morning everyone! A chilly wind blows across The Oval and players are woolly hatted on the outfield – vigorous football, nets, stretches, all the rest. How long have cricketers been playing football on the outfield - since the mid-90s?

Of yesterday’s centurions, Billy Root, Carlson, Ballance and Rutherford are still there.

Overnight scores:

DIVISION ONE

  • Kia Oval: Surrey v Essex: Surrey 342/7 (Jacks 88 not out, Foakes 69; Siddle 4-82)

  • Ageas Bowl: Hampshire v Yorkshire. Yorkshire 310/3 (Lyth 67, Ballance 120 not out, Root 94)

  • Trent Bridge: Nottinghamshire v Somerset: Notts 263 all out (Nash 58; Gregory 6-68); Somerset 74/3; Broad 2-12)

Edgbaston: Warwickshire v Kent: Kent 367/5 (Crawley 108, Robinson 59 not out)

DIVISION TWO

Middlesex v Lancs: Middx 236-9 (Eskinazi 75; Bailey 4-51, Anderson 3-41)

Leicestershire v Worcs: Worcs 348-4 (Mitchell 114, Rutherford 116 not out)

Gloucestershire v Derby: Derby 256-7 (Lace 83)

Glamorgan v Northants: Glam 433-4(Labuschagne 121, B Root 126 not out, Carlson 101 not out)

Durham v Sussex: Durham 210/8 ( Trevaskis 54; Robinson 3-49, Jordan 3-38)

In other news, you’ve probably read about the latest Stokes story, bowling the last over for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. Needing 18 to win, the Chennai Super Kings did it with a six off the last ball. This, courtesy of the BBC:

19.1: Jadeja drives Stokes back over his head for six, with both players falling to the ground

19.2: Stokes over-steps and Jadeja hits the ball through cover for a single

19.2: Dhoni pulls the free hit for two

19.3: Stokes bowls Dhoni with a superb yorker

19.4: Santner picks up two, pulling a high full toss that is initially signalled a no-ball but overturned

19.5: Santner clips towards long-on for two

20.0: Stokes bowls a wide outside off stump

20.0: Santner smashes a full delivery high over long-on to win the match

And finally - Inzamam Ul-Haq and Mark Boucher become honorary life members of the MCC, and some overnight highlights from Sophia Gardens to make you happy.
