The rising number of children being taken into care and fostering has left the county council £7.5m over its child social care budget
The Conservative-led Nottinghamshire County Council is expected to pass a motion calling for the Government to reform funding for councils, and to write to the Secretary of State asking for its concerns .
In the year to April this year, 875 children were looked after by the council - a rise from 797 the year before.
It fits a national picture, with more than 90 percent of councils over the child social care budgets, due to sharp increases in demand.
Before the overspend the council had predicted to spend £127 million on services for children and young people.
It comes at a time when all council budgets are under ever-increasing pressure, as the funding from central Government continues to decrease, and demand increases.
As well as the fostering and care budget, the council says there is 'unprecedented demand' for its other services, which is exacerbating pressure on its budgets.
The county council says looking after children is one of its most important roles - and a job it is required to do by law - but that the future for council services looks ‘increasingly difficult’ due to the funding pressure.
On Thursday, July 11, councillors are expected to agree to write to the Government calling for it to look again at funding for councils.
A Conservative motion - which is expected to pass - says that the current funding level ‘does not reflect’ the current needs it is facing.
