Countryfile's Anita Rani joins Woman's Hour as second presenter with Emma Barnett

Popular Countryfile presenter Anita Rani will be joining Emma Barnett as part of the Woman's Hour team, one of BBC Radio 4's biggest assets.

Anita, 43, will host the Friday and Saturday editions of the show, according to the BBC, with Emma keeping her Monday to Thursday slot.

Anita, who reached the semi-final on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, enthused: "I've long been a fan of Woman's Hour and I cannot wait to become part of it myself as second presenter, alongside the brilliant Emma Barnett.

"I am really looking forward to getting to know the listeners and discussing issues that matter to them most. Woman's Hour has always given a voice to people who may not be heard elsewhere and I want to continue that important tradition.

"What an honour, and what a way to kick off the weekend."

She will start her new role in just three days time.

Last year marked the departure of long-time hosts Jane Garvey and Dame Jenni Murray.

Emma, meanwhile, made her debut earlier this month.

Radio 4 controller Mohit Bakaya said he wanted the station to "better reflect and be relevant to the audience across the UK", and said that Anita would bring "a wealth of broadcasting experience."

And comedian Shappi Khorsandi led those welcoming Anita to the role, revealing that she would be "listening even more."

Emma had an eventful first week on the show, being tasked with reading out a message from the Queen to congratulate Woman's Hour on its 75 years.

"As you celebrate your 75th year, it is with great pleasure that I send my best wishes to the listeners and all those associated with Woman's Hour," Emma read out.

And two days into the job, guest Kelechi Okafor dropped out of an appearance over remarks made off-air.

*Woman's Hour airs weekdays at 10am on BBC Radio 4, and Weekend Woman's Hour at the later time of 4pm on Saturdays.
