Newport is a small and pretty coastal town, home to a mountain, an estuary and, as is widely acknowledged, the best pub in Pembrokeshire. The Golden Lion has been keeping travellers fed and watered ever since it opened in the 17th-century as a coach house. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, the food menu understands what people want to eat after a day of exploring North Pembrokeshire’s rugged and wild coastline. Think devilled Whitebait with homemade tartare sauce, beer battered cod and a regularly updated catch of the day board.
With dark stone walls, roaring fires and a low, beamed ceiling, the bar has everything wanted from a proper boozer, while the light and airy dining room is more modern, but more versatile too. Upstairs, there are 13 bedrooms. Unlucky for some but perfect for those who want to set up camp for a few days of beach hopping.
