Counterterrorism police investigating Melbourne phone tower fire

The fire started in the early hours of Friday morning but was quickly brought under control.

Counterterrorism officers are investigating a power and mobile phone tower fire in Melbourne's outer suburbs, with Victoria Police confirming the precautionary move came after a number of similar fires overseas.

The fire at Parnell Court in Cranbourne West was reported at 1:46am on Friday, a spokesperson from the Country Fire Authority said.

Crews from Cranbourne and Frankston responded to the incident, which was under control by 1:57am.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the fire was being investigated but it was not yet known if it was suspicious.

"Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad are attending the scene," the spokesperson said.

"Police from the Counter Terrorism Command are also attending as a precaution following a number of incidents internationally where mobile phone towers have been set alight.

"Should the investigation reveal that the fire was a deliberate act, it will be treated with the utmost seriousness and the offending viewed as a potential terrorism offence."

Conspiracy theories linking coronavirus with 5G have taken hold around the world, leading to arson attacks on phone towers.

There is no proven scientific link between the 5G mobile network and the virus.

Fifteen mobile phone towers in New Zealand were set alight in what were deemed suspicious fires, according to New Zealand media.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or other suspicious activity in the area is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
