CounterMove is a double bill of very different works: Alexander Ekman’s Cacti and Rafael Bonachela’s Lux Tenebris.
Originally choreographed for Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (the Dutch company’s group of young dancers), Cacti is a laugh–out–loud performance. It is a witty tribute to modern art, featuring the spiky succulent. Accompanied by a string quartet, the choreography plays on the youthful energy of its dancers.
Bonachela’s world premiere Lux Tenebris is an ensemble piece that explores contrast. Named after the Latin words for light and dark, the work is set to a sonic soundscape by Nick Wales. The movements follow the music’s mood, they are sharp, twisted and in true Bonachela style, deeply emotional.
