Countdown studio audience 'evacuated after Susie Dent smelt strong gas fumes'

The filming of Countdown was reportedly suspended after the studio audience was evacuated 'due to a smell of gas'.

It has been reported that that cameras had just began rolling on an episode of the popular Channel 4 show, when there were concerns for a smell that was drifting through the studio.

Dictionary corner were the first to notice that the gas smell could cause problems.

Countdown regular Susie Dent, 54, was reportedly the first to complain about the smell.

She raised her concerns to Loose Women panelist Janet Street Porter, 72, who was sitting next to her and the TV veteran then raised the alarm to producers.

The studio at MediaCity in Salford, Greater Manchester was then evacuated with producers ensuring that everyone was safely removed from the room.

Janet, 72, raised the alarm and managers ordered everyone off the Channel 4 set at MediaCity in Salford, Gtr Manchester.

One person who was in the audience told The Sun: “There was genuine panic at first and everyone was wondering what Susie and Janet were in a huddle talking about.

“It was half way through recording of the first episode and as we left others said they could smell gas as well.”

“One by one more people got involved and we were finally told we had to leave the studio. It was a bit alarming to say the least.”

After about 30 minutes, technicians had ruled out there being a gas leak and everyone was returned to the studio so that the filming could be finished.

Channel 4 has not commented on the reasons why filming was suspended.
