Countdown's Rachel Riley has praised seven MPs who quit Labour today in "protest over the future of British politics".

The star backed the new Independent Group on Monday following the announcement that they had quit over Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of Brexit and claims of anti-Semitism at a dramatic press conference.

Riley said the group of seven were "standing up for moral decency, declaring that Labour has been taken over by extremists".

In a series of tweets, the mathematician suggested she had tears in her eyes as she listened to Luciana Berger give testimony today.

Ms Berger had said she was "embarrassed and ashamed" to remain a Labour party which has become "institutionally anti-Semitic".

Riley then responded to a tweet that read: "There’s tears in my eyes hearing the truth in Luciana Berger’s words. The Labour Party has lost its values. It is no longer fit for purpose."

The presenter replied: "Wasn’t just me then...! It’s a huge message that people are listening."

Riley also tweeted words of support to Chuka Umunna who announced his resignation from the party this morning.

"I became a political activist to serve my community and to change the country for the better," he wrote. "My decision today – which has been painful and difficult - is rooted in the values and principles which I have always held."

Riley replied: "All strength to your arm."

The maths expert has previously said she has been targeted by Labour supporters on Twitter for her criticisms of the party and Mr Corbyn amid the ongoing anti-Semitism row.

Riley, who is Jewish, has said she has been trolled online and received physical threats.
