Countdown host Nick Hewer to be replaced by Colin Murray as he shields at home from Coronavirus

Colin Murray is set to take on a very prestigious role this week as he replaces Nick Hewer as host of popular quiz Countdown.

The Dundonald man will step into the role as 76-year-old current host Nick Hewer is shielding at home due to Coronavirus restrictions.

Welcoming Colin into the role, Nick tweeted: "Good luck to Colin Murray, popular dictionary corner guest and Countdown fanatic, who takes over from me as host today and for the rest of Covid Lockdown recordings (although I’ll still be on your screens for a week or two) as this 76 year old shields at home."

He said that despite the very meticulous procedures put in place by ITV and Channel 4 to keep everyone safe he will now be staying at home as requested by his family.

Adding: "Despite the amazing military-style safety protocols put in place by ITV Studios and Channel4. Between you and me, I’d have confidently carried on, but the family has handcuffed me to a radiator, saying ‘you’re not going anywhere’. So have fun Colin and keep my chair warm for me."

Responding to the tweet, Sports and radio presenter Colin said Nick's kind words had 'calmed his nerves somewhat'.

"That’s so very kind of you and much appreciated! You have calmed my nerves somewhat, so thank you! I shall make sure to keep your dressing room spotless! Love to the family ."

Former star of BBC The Apprentice, Nick Hewer took on the role of Countdown host in January 2012 after Jeff Stelling was forced to reluctantly give up to the role due to his Sky Sports commitments.

Countdown airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 2.10pm.
