‘Count your days Outback’: Customer orders steak and shrimp but what arrives at the table leaves them absolutely speechless

A visit to Outback Steakhouse turned into an internet mystery after a customer’s meal included what appeared to be a “strip of leather” on his plate. The odd-looking item left people scratching their heads online, sparking confusion and amusement.

According to Bro Bible, TikTok user Tony (@tony_501313) shared a video of the meal, which quickly racked up more than 95,000 views. The clip, set to the song Nope by So Supa, shows a long, dark strip of food stretching across the plate, with the accompanying shrimp looking unusually dry.

The mysterious strip appears overcooked, sporting a hard, dark brown crust, and is so thin and stiff that it barely resembles anything edible. On the video, text ominously declares, “Count your days Outback,” while Tony’s caption bluntly reads, “Ain’t no way they gave me a strip of leather.”

The meal looks nothing like what Outback advertises

The image of the bizarre meal has also made the rounds on Reddit, appearing on the r/shittyfoodporn subreddit in 2024, where users debated what it could actually be. According to Outback Steakhouse‘s website, the sirloin and shrimp meal should look juicy. It includes a thick cut of steak and four shrimp on a slice of bread. The steak’s outside should be seared to perfect medium doneness.

Customers can order their steak at different levels of doneness. However, a thin-cut steak can easily get overcooked if made well-done. On Reddit, restaurant workers said a well-done steak doesn’t have to be this dry. This situation mirrors other viral complaints about disappointing Michelin star dining experiences.

“They take the bread they give for free and cut it in half lengthways and spread garlic butter on it and toast it in oven. After they cool they go in a lexan and go by the sautee station. You only need to put it on the grill for maybe one minute each side to warm it up/grill marks. That plate shouldn’t have made it past expo thats for sure,” one person wrote on Reddit.

People on TikTok made jokes about the overdone meal. “Grilled beaver tail” one viewer said. Another commented, “They served u grilled brake pads.” A third person wrote, “that’s a fossilized period pad”.

Some people think the leathery item isn’t steak at all. “That better be the brown bread pressed down like a panini! I know good & well they didn’t raise no cow just to play over him,” one person said. Similar to other workplace drama stories in the restaurant industry, this incident sparked debate about food quality standards.
