Councillors vote to start works in preparation for new housing in Newmains

Councillors have given the go-ahead for land engineering works to be undertaken in preparation for a housing development in Newmains.

North Lanarkshire Council's planning committee granted permission to Advance Construction to carry out site clearance, mine shaft remedial work, and earthworks at the former Costain Works east of Main Street.

That's in preparation for a housing development at the location.

The site - large areas of which are covered in concrete - is also partially overgrown and topography is described as "very uneven" barring some areas of standing water.

Planning permission for residential development has lapsed on two previous occasions, but the latest application was granted in July.

Planning officers agreed that the application should be granted subject to various conditions and the committee agreed unanimously.
