Councillors vote to approve construction of controversial £118 million Cross Tay Link Road

Councillors have approved the local authority’s planning application for the controversial Cross Tay Link Road, despite several last minutes pleas from villagers to halt the project.

The decision clears the way for officials to complete compulsory purchase orders for land needed to start building the new route north of Scone and to appoint a suitable contractor to undertake the costly project.

Community councillors raised a range of concerns about the proposal such as its impact on public health at a meeting of the local authority’s planning and development management committee on Wednesday, October 21.

Jill Belch of Scone and District Community Council reminded the committee a public health official once warned PKC putting the road through a planned development north of the village would put future residents’ health at risk.

And her community council colleague Donald McKerracher also argued an associated proposal to stop up a road near Scone would seriously inconvenience other villagers and ought to be dropped altogether.

However these concerns and a long list of others failed to convince a majority of councillors to vote against a recommendation to approve the application, which drew 47 objections and just one letter of support during a public consultation held late last year.
