Councillors urge Lanarkshire groups to apply for community grants created from leftover funds

Cambuslang and Rutherglen Area Committee are asking local groups in need of support to apply for funding.

The group awarded almost £2000 in community grants to local groups this week, but say nearly £35,000 is still available to be paid out.

That's as a result of the pandemic, which has seen a number of groups halt, defer or even cancel their activity.

Clyde Cycle Park SCIO, Burnside in Bloom and Fernhill Kids Playscheme all received a slice of the cash last week after the committee agreed to greenlight £1850 of applications via a live-streamed video.

That saw Clyde Cycle Park SCIO given £1000 for equipment and materials, Burnside in Bloom picked given £600 for their environmental project, and Fernhill Kids Playscheme £250 for an outing and entrance fees

But members are anxious for other organisations to apply for funding, with almost £35,000 - 90 per cent - still to be allocated during the current financial year.

Councillor Martin Lennon questioned why they still had the funds.

He said: "I just find it a wee bit bizarre that we've got about 90 per cent of the budget to allocate at the end of the year.

"So my understanding is that £41,000 for community grants, just for this financial year and we've only allocated under, maybe it's a bit more than ten per cent.

"It just seems incredible that we've got a budget for £41,000 to get our own community grants and we've got one meeting remaining and we're looking at the nest part of 35 grand in the bank.

"I can certainly think of community groups that could do with a wee bit of funding that we could be providing. It just seems bizarre to have such a large chunk of it unallocated.

"Is it a failure of advertising, do the community groups just not know that this money is there?

"Or are they all just so well funded that they don't want it?"

Rutherglen South Councillor Carol Nugent said: “These are exceptional times that we are in.

"Many of the groups that would come in for funding are not meeting, they're not taking place.

"We want to make as many awards as possible, but there's just simply the circumstances - the groups aren't meeting, there's not as much coming through."

The Cambuslang and Rutherglen Area Committee has been allocated £41,430 for 2021/2022 and has previously awarded £4736 in grants so far this year, leaving £34,844 unallocated.

The councillors hope to carry the remaining money forward to use for next year and advertise more about the scheme.

The aim of the community grant scheme is to fund activities and projects that can bring the community together and improve the environment as well as funding outings to help with start-up costs and special events.

The group is: “more than happy to consider any applications".

More information can be found on the council website and applications are accepted throughout the year.
