Councillors unanimously agree to welcome Hong Kong residents to North Lanarkshire

Councillors unanimously agreed to welcome Hong Kong residents to North Lanarkshire during a meeting last week.

Many who hold British National Overseas passports are moving to the UK from Hong Kong due to tensions with China.

During Thursday’s full council meeting, Conservative Airdrie councillor Trevor Douglas had a motion unanimously supported by his fellow councillors. It read: “This council notes that difficult circumstances currently taking place between Hong Kong and the People’s Republic of China; supports the UK Government’s plans to offer almost three million Hong Kong citizens who hold British National Overseas passports to apply to live in the UK; agrees to support and encourage people from Hong Kong to choose North Lanarkshire as a place to live, learn work, invest and visit.”

After the meeting Councillor Douglas said “It’s so important that we recognise our historic commitment to the people of Hong Kong and welcome them to North Lanarkshire.

“This is an opportunity to forge a strong relationship with the people of Hong Kong that will bring both cultural and economic benefits to us all.”
