Councillors set for talks on introducing free parking at Callander car park

Free parking at a spot in Callander looks set to be part of discussions between councillors.

Stirilng Council’s environment and housing convener Councillor Jim Thomson has agreed to meet with Trossachs and Teith ward Tory councillor Martin Earl to hear more about the suggestion.

At a full meeting of Stirling Council last Thursday, Councillor Earl had asked the convener when an initial free period of parking would be introduced at Callander’s Station Road car park.

However, Councillor Thomson replied: “A programme of community developed community parking management plans has been followed, although this has been delayed, recognising the need for effective consultation.

“The development of Callander Community Parking Management Planning (CPMP) has not formally started, although council officers have provisionally engaged the community over the last year on specific issues. It is anticipated that the process will commence at the end of this year.

“Once formal engagement starts associated with Callander’s plan, the consideration of parking options for Callander can be discussed.

“Through existing discussions, officers are not aware of a community proposal to consider a period of free parking as yet, however once this engagement commences all options will be considered.”

Councillor Earl said: “I know the officers are saying they are not aware of any requests from the community but there have been in the past.

“With the much delayed Parking Management Plan, once it’s in place it’s going to take a huge amount of time, especially for Callander.

“I’d like to request a specific meeting with you to discuss this in more detail and hopefully be able to explain how we can make a case for something to be done outwith the management plan process.”

Councillor Thomson said he would be happy to meet with Councillor Earl.
