Conservative councillors are trying to stop a plan which would see camper vans allowed to stay overnight at seafront car parks in South Ayrshire.
SNP and Labour politicians approved a pilot on Tuesday to create 20 bays for the vehicles at car parks at Ayr's Blackburn Road and Girvan’s Knockcushan Street.
It would cost visitors £5 per night and was due to start in April.
But Conservative councillors have called in the decision and want it scrapped.
Ayr West councillor Derek McCabe said: “Blackburn car park is not suitable. We agree in principle about providing a facility for motor homes. We want to encourage trade and bring people to Ayr.
“But somewhere else needs to be found. The Blackburn car park is surrounded by residential areas. There has also been a lack of consultation on the plan.”
The proposal will go in front of South Ayrshire Council’s audit & governance panel on Wednesday for scrutiny.
Temporary “waste disposal facilities” are to be installed at the Girvan and Ayr car parks for the camper van scheme.
Camper vans would only be allowed to stay for one night – and can’t return within 24 hours.
The pilot, which would run until September, would cost £30,000 to get up an running.
If there is a 75 per cent uptake of the parking bays, the council stands to make £27,300, according to a council paper.
There is also a bid to crack down on people parking up overnight along the Ayr Esplanade and Girvan’s Louisa Drive and Harbour Street.
However, the future of the project is now up in the air.
