Councillors have given plans for three new projects in Gateshead the green light

Gateshead is changing rapidly as a number of new developments take shape, but not everything the council's planning committee deals with involves major housing projects.

People living and working in the area may notice a lot of smaller projects get off the ground after a raft of new plans were approved by local councillors.

Birtley

A building that used to be the home of a food and drink wholesaler will now be transformed after the planning committee approved proposals for a huge program of works.

The John F Hunt Group will pull down part of the office and warehouse space at the former Palmer and Harvey on Shadon Way and divide the rest into six units.

Blaydon

An application to turn a warehouse and offices in Factory Road, into a tip for commercial and industrial waste were given the greenlight by the committee.

NWH Waste Services will use the site as a waste transfer station including waste recycling, storage of waste materials, storage of products.

Chopwell

Peddle power prevailed at a Gateshead park as plans to lay a new bike track were given the go-ahead by the borough.

Members of Gateshead Council's Planning Committee to lay a "pump track" at Chopwell Park on land North of Marx Terrace.

A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns and features designed to be ridden completely by riders "pumping" or creating momentum by up and down body movements, instead of pedalling or pushing.

Council planners have recommended approval despite the coal authority lodging a "holding objection".

A council report said: "The Coal Authority have issued a holding objection in relation to the application awaiting the receipt of additional information (which is now under consideration).

"It is considered likely that the concerns of the Coal Authority can be satisfied through the additional information submitted and through the imposition of conditions (where necessary)."
