Councillors block off development plans at controversial Raheny site

City councillors have rezoned a landbank in Raheny, officially sealing it off from future development projects.

The site had been subject to multiple housing applications in recent years despite local opposition. The site will now have the same protected status as its neighbour, St Anne’s Park.

The privately owned landbank spans 16.5 acres. Councillors voted to rezone the area as public space during a meeting with public reps as part of the city’s new development plan.

It is officially protected under a new Z9 city development plan, which protects public spaces for recreational and environmental purposes.

The Marlet Group attempted to lodge plans last month for 580 apartments and a 100 bed nursing home on the site. However, this application was flatly rejected by the High Court. The construction of buildings could negatively impact migrating birds from North America that routinely come to the site in winter time.

The site was formerly home to several playing pitches and is located east of St Paul's College near Sybil Hill. The new plans will come into effect on 14 December.
