Councillor warns Galway will move to Level 3 as hordes gather at Spanish Arch

A local councillor has predicted Galway will be moved to Level 3 after sharing a photo of hordes of people gathering at Spanish Arch in the city.

Fine Gael's Eddie Hoare, who has previously called for sprinklers to disperse crowds in this area, posted a photo on Twitter of dozens crowding the popular drinking spot.

He said: "Spanish Arch, Galway tonight. Numbers will inevitability continue to rise. I’d expect Level 3 restriction before the end of the week..."

A further 390 new cases of Covid-19 were announced today.

Galway had the fourth highest number of cases with 21 recorded.

And it is among the counties Dr Ronan Glynn singled out for attention in his speech this evening.

He said:

“I am asking everyone, but particularly those living and working in Cork, Galway, Monaghan and Roscommon, to adhere to the public health advice.

"There is still time to get the virus back under control in these areas, break the chains of transmission and stop the spread of this highly infectious disease in these communities.
