Councillor urges residents to get behind Hamilton Accies

A Hamilton councillor is urging residents to get behind their local team as coronavirus restrictions are eased.

Hamilton West and Earnock councillor, Mary Donnelly, has bought a season ticket to support Hamilton Accies so they can keep supporting the community.

Most football teams have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic with the loss of income as a result of supporters being unable to attend matches, while Accies have the additional hit of relegation from the Premiership.

Now Councillor Donnelly is calling on the town to rally behind the team in any way they can.

She told Lanarkshire Live : "At long last - I have managed to do it - I got my season book for Hamilton Accies and purchased an Accies polo shirt to wear when attending a match.

"I have supported the team from a very young age and living in Whitehill, it was the right thing to do."

With finances as tight for residents as they are for Accies, Councillor Donnelly realises not everyone will be in the same position she is.

"I understand finances just now can be very tight during this pandemic," she added.

"It would be fantastic if, coming out of the pandemic, residents of Hamilton could either purchase a ticket for the odd match or - if they can afford to - purchase a season book.

"This would greatly help the club who are very community orientated and financially supportive to the community whenever they can."

Councillor Donnelly has a long affiliation with Accies and recalls her memories of her local team.

She added: "Being very close to the old Douglas Park, you could hear the roar when they scored a goal on match days.

"I have very fond memories of babysitting for Stan Anderson who played with Hamilton Accies and when Stan and Maureen, his wife, were attending dinners it was a topic of many a conversation and Stan shared his enthusiasm.

"Talking about a game ignited that flame as he spoke about matches. Of course Stan had the beauty of learning from our famous Jock Stein who did kickabouts in the street with the local children."
