Councillor Tom Brabazon elected as new Lord Mayor of Dublin

Tom Brabazon has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of Dublin at a special meeting of Dublin City Council this evening.

The Fianna Fail councillor will replace his party colleague Paul McAuliffe who has stepped down after he was successfully elected as a TD in the General Election earlier this month.

Councillor Brabazon, who has acting Lord Mayor for the past three weeks was up against Councillor Anthony Flynn for the position.

Councillor Brabazon won a tight vote by 34 votes to 26 with three abstentions.

Addressing the meeting, the new Lord Mayor told councillors it was a "great privilege and an honour" to be elected to the role.

Councillor Brabazon was first elected to the council in 2003.

He will serve as Lord Mayor of the city until June 2020.
