Councillor 'speechless' after 'shocking' fly-tipping at South Belfast community garden

A South Belfast councillor has said she was left speechless after "two houses" worth of waste were fly-tipped at a new community project.

DUP Councillor Tracy Kelly said she was appalled to see sofas, beds, tables and chests of drawers dumped on a piece of land on Donegall Avenue which the community is transforming into a new community alleyway.

She said that those emptying properties in the area were taking advantage of council clean-up teams who are already struggling to keep the city clean and tidy.

Speaking to Belfast Live, councillor Kelly said: "When I saw just how much had been fly tipped from those houses I was speechless, especially when you consider the work that local residents have been doing to improve their area.

"Those who dumped all of this there clearly do not care about the impact that this has on the community and they are taking advantage of council services, knowing that these items will be cleared, instead of disposing of them properly themselves.

"Landlords and homeowners who are clearing houses in South Belfast should not be allowed to get away with fly-tipping like this.

"Belfast City Council is already struggling to keep the city clean and tidy, but it will never happen if clearouts like this continue to be left in the street."
