Councillor shaken up after he was targeted in firebomb attack in Dewsbury

Arsonists have firebombed a councillor's house in West Yorkshire early yesterday throwing petrol bombs outside the property.

Masood Ahmed represents Dewsbury South for Labour on Kirklees Council.

He described how his family and him are "lucky to be alive" following the incident at 1:30am on Wednesday, which was captured on CCTV.

Mr Ahmed, who has lived in the area for 45 years, promised that he would not be driven out by the attack, which badly damaged two cars.

They have been removed by police for examination.

Ten members of Mr Ahmed's family, including two grandchildren, were in the house at the time. He said the video showed four people in a car carrying petrol bombs, which were thrown at vehicles.

He said everyone was "shaken up and scared" and described the perpetrators as "total scumbags".

West Yorkshire Police confirmed it is investigating two car fires and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said crews from Dewsbury attended the scene.

It said in a statement: "This was two separate vehicle fires on the same road. The fires are both being treated as deliberate and police are investigating." Two fire engines left the scene at around 2:30am.

No one was injured in the incident.

Kirklees Council is tightening security following the attack and the chief executive has written to all councillors advising how they can take measures to protect themselves.
