Councillor Seána Ó Rodaigh to be elected as new Mayor of Fingal County Council

Skerries Councillor Seána Ó Rodaigh is set to be elected as the new mayor of Fingal next month.

The Labour Party rep will replace outgoing Mayor David Healy at next month’s AGM of Fingal County Council.

Councillor Ó Rodaigh will be the first female to be elected to a senior position by the council's current controlling group of Fianna Fail, The Greens and Labour.

Independent Councillor Jimmy Guerin hailed the imminent appointment as a welcome one.

He said: “This is a most welcome appointment and one I am delighted to see. I whole heartedly welcome Cllr Ó Rodaigh’s appointment and I look forward to working with her in the coming year.

"I have raised the issue of gender equality at many meetings and at a recent meeting of the members I sought changes in our standing orders to make gender balance a reality.”

Since the last election Fingal councillors have made more than 30 senior appointments and previously every Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Chair of SPC committees have been male appointments.

These roles carry annual payments ranging from €6,000 for a chair to €30,000 per annum for the office of Mayor.

Councillor Guerin added: “This is not about additional payments or who holds office, it is all about gender balance and equality.

"While my proposal did not proceed with regard to changing the standing orders, it did result in the setting up of a women’s caucus, which is scheduled to hold its first meeting in the coming months."

The council's AGM will be held in the Grand Hotel Malahide on the of June 18.
