Councillor says fly tippers have turned Lanarkshire street into dumping ground

A Wishaw councillor has blasted litter louts who are turning one street near the town centre into a dumping ground.

Councillor Bob Burgess hit out at the state of Belhaven Terrace and has called on the council to help clean one of the oldest streets in the town.

The Conservative elected member said: “I am looking for a task force to take this area on as we did two years ago.

“We had reasonable success and that has lasted over the last two years, we need something similar before it sinks in a sea of rubbish.

“I couldn’t believe the mess of the street. You would need two trucks to get rid of all the mess.”

In February, the Wishaw Press was contacted by a long-term resident of the street telling us that residential and business bins were left out in Belhaven Terrace, with the resident saying “enough is enough”.

The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said: “The entrance to Belhaven Terrace, a street with a great history associated with the success of Wishaw as an industrial town, has descended to a dump.

“Residential and business bins are kept out on the street and never removed to the rear of the buildings.

“Idiots have pushed one of the business bins along the street blocking the road.

“All the money that was spent to improve the main street and 20 metres away a dump. This must surely be attracting vermin.

“Quite frankly it’s a disgrace. The council spent millions on redeveloping the town centre but you go just down the road and you see this mess.”

A council spokesman said the local authority agreed with the councillor’s concerns.

The spokesman added: “Fly tipping is an eyesore in our communities and can also lead to public health issues as it attracts vermin.

“Fly tipping is a criminal activity and our officers can issue a Fixed Penalty Notice of £200 to those responsible.

“The public can help by reporting incidents of fly tipping, with details of individuals and vehicles involved, to the council on 0345 143 0015.”
