A Motherwell councillor has hit out at North Lanarkshire Council over the poor state of roads in one area of the town.
Nathan Wilson admitted he was hugely frustrated by the council’s “disappointing response” after contacting NLC’s roads department over the conditions of several streets in Muirhouse.
On a visit to the local area, Councillor Wilson said parts of the surfaces at Muirhouse Road, Barons Road, Muirhouse Drive, Clyde Terrace and Merryton Road are all in a concerning state of disrepair.
The Conservative councillor, who represents the Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig ward, raised the issue with the local authority’s roads team and stressed that the potholes, cracks and uneven surfaces on the roads meant permanent repair work should be arranged.
In particular, he highlighted sections of Muirhouse Road and Clyde Terrace in a bad condition.
He told Lanarkshire Live : “I am dismayed by the recent response from the local authority advising that resurfacing will not be arranged for any of the roads in the current financial year.
“The lack of urgency to restore the condition of the roads is simply not good enough and I have made further representations to the council to express my frustration at the current inaction.
“I have also stressed that if the council chooses to hold to it’s current position then at the very minimum, a commitment should be made to initiating permanent resurfacing work in the early part of the next financial year and to restore the condition of the roads in Muirhouse.”
Whilst the roads team agreed to arrange an inspection to assess the existing condition of the surfaces and said that patching works may be arranged, the reply was clear that a wide-ranging resurfacing scheme would not be arranged during the 2021/22 financial year.
In his most recent representation, Councillor Wilson has requested that the initial decision not to organise a resurfacing scheme is reconsidered and at the very least, the local authority should commit to carrying out permanent remedial works to the Muirhouse roads early in the 2022/23 financial year.
A council spokesman said: “The roads at Muirhouse are inspected as part of the council’s safety inspection regime however a further inspection will be carried out to assess the general condition and identify any defects.
“If necessary, some permanent patching work may be undertaken in this financial year. However, any more extensive resurfacing would be considered as part of the council’s resurfacing budget in future years, as the current year’s budget is fully allocated.”
