Councillor hits out as shocking mess discovered in Wishaw after Bonfire Night

A councillor has blasted louts after a shocking mess was left after Bonfire Night.

Empty firework packets and household rubbish were piled in a scorched heap on Heathery Road, Wishawhill, which was discovered on Friday morning.

Mattresses and other household items had also been dragged to the site and were left next to the pile.

Wishawhill councillor Kenneth Duffy said: “There were fireworks left behind and there had been no clean up whatsoever.

“Council officers called me on Friday morning and were quick to attend the area to begin clearing the mess. That grass area is a well-used area for dogs, It’s irritating and it shows a disrespect for people and the community.”

Across Lanarkshire, police and fire crews had to respond to dozens of calls over fireworks.

On Friday night, a Lanarkshire Police spokesperson said: “In the past two and a half hours, our officers have attended 17 calls regarding fireworks.

“Last night we dealt with almost 100 incidents relating to fireworks and bonfires.”
