The creation of a new nursery at the community centre in Wishawhill has been hit by a further delay and will not now be ready until towards the end of the year at the earliest.
The initial start date for construction was February but this was moved to the end of March and is yet to begin.
It has since emerged that the council only proceeded to appoint a contractor for the project in April.
The council’s contractor for the works has now taken control of the site and started preparations for carrying out the refurbishment of the Wishawhill community centre into the Heathery Park Family Learning Centre with the target completion date now set for October 2022.
Scottish Conservative councillor for Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig, Nathan Wilson, said: “Just when the project seemed to be moving along nicely in the early part of this year, the plans to redevelop the Wishawhill community centre into a brand new nursery has become mired in further delay.
“The council’s aim is to deliver nine new and distinct family learning centres, with Wishawhill now the only one where the process remains unfinished.
“The completion of the second last nursery took place in November 2021, meaning that if Wishawhill is eventually ready by this October, it will have fallen almost a year behind the eighth early years centres to be constructed.
“It should now be an urgent priority of the council to stop Wishawhill falling any further adrift of the other new family learning centres and conclude the 1140 build programme in North Lanarkshire.”
