A councillor is urging the parents of young people to do their bit to curb antisocial behaviour taking place in Netherton woodland.
Conservative councillor, Bob Burgess, who represents residents living in the Wishaw ward, has welcomed the increase in police patrols in and around Carbarns Wood but is calling on parents to ask their children what they are up to when they’re not at home.
He described damage caused in the area as “horrendous”, but claims parents have to take a share of the responsibility as cops can’t be there 24 hours a day.
Trees have been set on fire and there have been reports to police of large groups of youths congregating and drinking alcohol at evenings and weekends.
Councillor Burgess told Lanarkshire Live : “The damage being done in the Carbarns Woods area is horrendous, gangs of youths drinking with possible drug taking and dealing, the police are doing all they can under the constraints they have.

“Police officers on dirt bikes, cycles, and quad bikes, even the mounted branch have all been deployed, they are doing a sterling job but cant be there 24/7.”
According to the councillor, those causing the damage are putting not only others in danger but themselves as well.
He urged parents to ask questions of their children and “take control” of the situation.
“I’m glad to see that the police have increased their presence in the Netherton Carbarns Wood area, but do you know where your children are? That’s the question I need to ask.
“Why are children congregating in such large numbers?
“Parents need to get involved and take control, or what is the point.”

Police Scotland say they are aware that youths from various areas in Lanarkshire have been gathering in the area of Carbarns Wood and Cambusnethan Priory and reports of antisocial behaviour and youths drinking have been made.
Sergeant Jim Mutter at Wishaw Police Station said: “Throughout the school summer holidays police have pro-actively patrolled the area on foot and bike and recently on off road motor bike.
"Officers have also been assisted by mounted branch and air support.
“Wishaw Community Police will continue to carry out patrols in the area and are keen to engage with the public who use the area.

"I would also appeal to parents to be aware of the situation and I echo Councillor Burgess’ comments.
“The Carbarns Wood and Cambusnethan Priory area are visited by people from all over Lanarkshire and beyond who come to enjoy the walk and views and should not have this ruined by drunk antisocial youths who leave a mess behind.
“I am also keen for members of the public to be vigilant at local shops for children who are being sold alcohol or asking adults to buy alcohol for them.
"The signs for this are usually large groups congregating outside the shop.
“It is an offence for anyone to sell alcohol to anyone under the age of 18 and it is an offence to buy alcohol for people under the age of 18."
