A Northumberland County Councillor has requested an urgent meeting with Highways England to address the "lethal" junctions on the A1.
Cllr Glen Sanderson has said action is needed to lower the alarming accident figures on the A1 in Northumberland.
It comes after a horror five-vehicle crash, involving a tractor, on the southbound carriageway near Shilbottle on Monday which closed parts of the road for more than six hours.
Three people - including two children - were airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle while another two people were transported to hospital by ambulance.
Cllr Sanderson, vice-chairman of the Transport North East Committee, feels change is needed to be made and is keen to overhaul the many smaller "hellish" junctions - particularly near Shilbottle.
He told ChronicleLive: "The incident on the A1 yesterday near Shilbottle was terribly regrettable.
"That particular stretch of the A1 has a lot of junctions with no particular good access.
"The junctions coming on and off the A1 as well as the central reservations are potentially lethal and need to be made safer.
"The accident record in that area is high with a number of fatalities in the past few years.
"I am seeking a meeting with Highways England to consider the need for the junctions to be altered or addressed as well as the potential of lowering the speed limit in that area to 50mph.
"Speed restrictions are in place in other areas of the A1 and I think it would help."
The A1 was closed for hours as officers carried out investigation and recovery work, causing delays for bank holiday drivers.
Police are now investigating and are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the collision.
