Councillor calls for Merthyr Tydfil to introduce nappy recycling scheme

Merthyr Tydfil Council has been asked to set up a nappy recycling scheme.

A motion set to go before full council suggests that the authority looks at the viability of setting up a scheme in Merthyr Tydfil .

Leader of the opposition Labour group, Councillor Darren Roberts, has submitted the notice of motion which suggests a business case is drawn up for the scheme.

In the motion he highlights how seven Welsh authorities including Rhondda Cynon Taf , Swansea , Bridgend , Blaenau Gwent , Conwy , Gwynedd and Carmarthenshire have all engaged in the scheme.

He says that nappies and absorbent hygiene products account for 10% of all household waste in Wales and so is the largest identifiable and ever increasing category of household waste sent to landfill.

Cllr Roberts highlights how the average child uses between 4,500 and 5,000 nappies until they are potty trained and so each child is using around 150 black bags worth of nappies in their first few years.

He says that with over 90,000 households using disposable nappies, Wales is producing 27,000 tonnes of this material each year which is over 140 million nappies per year and it is estimated to take 500 years for a nappy to fully decompose in landfill.
