Plans to extent the Sydenham Greenway would help improve area and create a passage to North Down a leading councillor has said.
DUP group leader, councillor George Dorrian, who put forward a motion to extent the greenway in 2018, feels that the proposals would bring much needed improve to the Sydenham area, and already has a ready-made route.
The plans would see the current greenway, that ends at the entrance to Victoria Park, extended to the Hollywood Exchange.
Speaking to Belfast Live the councillor said: "There is a stark contrast to where the greenway ends and directly across the road.
"On one side you have a nice well maintained path and brilliant working street lights. Then across the road you have old street lights, some of which work and some that are on during the day.
"The path itself could also do with some improvement.
"There is already a public right of way in place that could easily be converted into a greenway, which would benefit and enhance the area and create a passage into North Down.
"There are also local schools and football clubs that would benefit from having the greenway practically on their doorstep."
The Department for Infrastructure has said that it has held preliminary discussions with Belfast City Council regarding the Sydenham Greenway.
It has said that a feasibility study on the possibility of a cycle lane from Victoria Park to the Hollywood Exchange has been carried out, but a route is yet to be agreed.
A DfI spokesperson said: “The Department has held a number of preliminary discussions with Belfast City Council about the potential for a ‘Sydenham Greenway.’
"A feasibility study for a cycle route from Victoria Park to Holywood Exchange has been carried out with a route still to be agreed. Once a route is agreed, the next stage would be to draw up a detailed design and costing, subject to funding.”
