Councillor applauded after giving moving speech in chamber as he stands down

A Merseyside councillor was applauded after giving a powerful speech as he bows out of local politics.

Cllr Dan T Lewis is not seeking re-election for his seat in Blundellsands, and at a meeting at Southport Town Hall last night the Labour councillor thanked the group for its support.

Sefton Council has appointed a new chief executive - and everyone is making the same joke

He said: "Your politics and values matter, in everything you do in life. Who you are matters.

"I came into politics because of the struggle of class and there is always work to be done.

"This council has made sure that young people are getting school meals, made sure the elderly are looked after and protected and made sure people with disabilities are getting access to the services they need; because the government doesn't care - but this council does.

"Being a councillor, for me, the last four years has meant that when I have spoken to other young people; other people of black and minority ethnic backgrounds, they see that they are able to do this.

"The council isn't for old white men, no matter how much they may jeer when a brown man stands up and talks, or when a woman stands up and talks.

"The council isn't for rich people. Politics is for everyone."

The Full Council meeting also saw a motion moved that will mean Sefton throws its weight behind a campaign to end people being locked up in 'ineffective, expensive and ineffective prison-like detention centres' because they don't have the right paperwork.

There will also be more done to prevent human trafficking in the borough, and there will soon be a ban on all balloon and Chinese lantern releases across Sefton.
