Councillor apologises for telling journalist 'Hitler would have loved you'

A county councillor has apologised for telling a journalist that ‘Hitler would have loved you’.

Galway representative Noel Thomas was responding to a tweet by Sinead Ryan in which she welcomed the news that the Digital Covid-19 Certificate mandate for restaurants and pubs would remain beyond October 22.

The journalist and broadcaster added that people wouldn’t “protect themselves”, the rest of the public must “do it by dissociation”.

Her response on Thursday to a report that the Government was examining the possibility of extending the Digital Covid-19 Certification mandate stated: “Unvaxed people shouldn’t be permitted into restaurants, pubs or indoor venues. If they won’t protect themselves, the rest of us must do it by dissociation.”

Connemara and Aran Islands Local Electoral Area Cllr. Noel Thomas responded on Saturday morning in a now-deleted post that said “Hitler would have loved you Sinéad”.

Ms. Ryan then highlighted Cllr. Thomas’ remarks to the accounts of the Fianna Fail party, party leader Micheal Martin as well as Galway County Council.

She stated: “I’ve been trolled in my time for supporting Govt vaccination policy but this crosses a boundary. I’ve reported to twitter but perhaps Fianna Fáil party, Micheal Martin TD [and] Galway County Council can address.”

Later on Saturday morning Cllr. Thomas addressed his earlier post by posting: “I would like to apologise to anyone that may have been offended by my tweet but what I wrote was written in anger after reading the tweet that Sinéad put up.

"I have removed it and will issue a new response.”
