Councillor allowed back in Labour Party after suspension for Corbyn motions

A Merseyside councillor has been readmitted to the Labour Party after being suspended last year.

It is understood that Cllr Tony Norbury, who represents Prenton on Wirral Council, was suspended in December for voting in favour of two motions pledging solidarity with Jeremy Corbyn and a third motion on free speech.

The motions were passed at a meeting of the Birkenhead Constituency Labour Party (CLP) at the end of November.

This was after Jeremy Corbyn’s suspension for suggesting anti-semitism was “dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party”.

Mr Corbyn was speaking shortly after the publication of a damning report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) into anti-semitism within the Labour Party.

Speaking to the ECHO today, the Prenton councillor said: “The NEC (National Executive Committee) found I did not break any rules.

“I’m disappointed the Labour Party disciplinary process took so long. It can be stressful.

"People in public office can suffer reputational damage.

“I got some adverse comments on social media which I had to tackle.”

It is understood that Cllr Norbury had to remain suspended from the party until his case went to the next scheduled NEC disputes panel.

The Labour Party said it cannot comment on disciplinary matters on the record.
